Speed test equipment

What's everyone using? Looking for some cheap options. Was looking at using the traxxas telemetry but just way too expensive.

I strap my phone to my truck for speed runs lol. It's pretty darn accurate

That's normally what I would do, with my old s4 but it's since died and upgraded to a s7 edge. Don't think I want to take the chance with it.

The hobbyking Quanum GPS Logger V2 looks like a good option but it looks to be discontinued. Seems like alot of the onboard meters are discontinued for some reason.

In the past we had something like the Venom Speed meter
VENOM, Speed Meter ,(VEN-0615)

This device did hit the market under several brandnames like Robbe and even Traxxas so probably you should be able to find one.

On the other hand a GPS meter does not cost that much. In the search of a Venom look-a-like I came to this:
Review: DYNAMITE Passport GPS Speed Meter
But a bit pricy

I've been using the SkyRC data logger for few years. No complaint.

Roelof:

Was looking for the venom because of the great price but looks like it was discontinued.

I think that's a winner. Great price and I can use it for snowmobiling too. Love the google earth overlay too for track use.

Edit: Hmm, unfortunately the reviews are not good. Looks like hit or miss.

Still haven't found anything. Any around ~80 have bad reviews like the speed goes from 40-130mph.

Horizon hobby has an updated version of it.

I've been using the SkyRC for about 3 years. Never used the google earth part, or downloaded my info. Still dinosaur with computers. I've tried it in cars, and compared its recorded speed to police radar gun. Got same.

RC Juice 04-05-2017 10:22 AM

We have sold hundreds and hundreds of the SkyRC units, we had one guy one time that swore it wouldn't read over 91mph (never sent it back for us to check out), and another guy that said "after one use it was full of moisture" (they are not rated as waterproof) but other than that we have never had a single complaint or issue with them in the years we have sold them. Believe me, if guys have an issue with anything we will know :)

matrix243 04-05-2017 04:25 PM

The skyRC looks like a good unit only it would be close to $200 once I get it up here in canada unfortunately, and I can get a garmin nuvi for $130 that's already here. Hmm, made that's the route. Was what I wanted also for snowmobiling, except kind of big to fit on an rc.

matrix243 04-05-2017 04:29 PM

Maybe not. 5" is close to a phone. Would still like something cheaper though. And I don't think the nuvi records speed.

matrix243 04-05-2017 05:02 PM

Probably does I guess if it datalogs a trip. Not sure about details on whether it shows max speeds. Imagine it would.
