i let the smoke out
i flipped my wires and plugged in my positive to negative and let the smoke out of my esc. it was only connected for a second or 2. I know once i let the magic smoke out of my esc it becomes a paper weight...however, is my lipo battery trash too?
i plugged it into another car after correcting the wires and it worked, but i am concerned that i might have damaged it? do i need to worry or am is it OK do you think? |

I was just going to post the same thing. I just did what I never thought I would and the smoke came from the battery negative terminal and either the ESC or the thing connected to the ESC. I then hooked it correctly and got more smoke from the both the ESC and battery again. The battery isn't puffed at all. I assume the ESC is damaged, but how can I tell. I took the cover off and there is nothing black or burned. When I tried hooking it up to another battery, when I put the positive in a spark flew up so I just pulled it away immediately. Not sure what to do..
Added a photo of the ESC http://www.rctech.net/forum/members/...ockspec3-1.jpg |
Sorry to say the esc is toast.

Well, if the ESC is shorted, then excessive current might flow from the battery, which in turn creates heat, and possible damage to the battery cells. You would probably be ok to try it briefly, just don't leave it plugged in.

I'm assuming that is a HW ESC, but I don't see you mention the model. Anyway, if it is, HWNA will evaluate it, tell you that you "let the smoke out", and probably offer you a discount on a new ESC. You will have to send it in though for them to take a look at it.
