Protek Batteries
 

Anyone have an opinion on these. Amain is 25 percent off Protek right now. Heard good things but recent reviews read there is puffing? Also, LiHV compatible to charge to 4.35? Is this a special battery or can all higher c rated batteries advertise his? Thx

I've been using the 100C Supreme 6400 in 17.5 TC for about 6 months. Beating pretty good with 30-40 amp charge and 4.35 per cell regularly. Only recently has it started to get a slight puff to it. Many locals use the pack and many are discharging at 40 and charging at 40+ ever round. Most are getting good life before some puffing starts. Pretty sure if were charging under 20 amps and keep around 8.4, you'd never have any puffing or issues. IR numbers have been decent .9-1.4 depending on pack or users Icharger since they all seem to vary some.

I bought four of the "supreme power" 100C 4S 6700 hard case Lipos in December of 2013. All of them were run in my MBX7 ECO, charged at no higher than 1C, always storage charged, and if I wasn't using them for more than a few weeks, I'd cycle them on my charger to keep them active. All four of them had a cell go bad within less than a year......

I switched to SMC 6500 4S Race Formula hard case packs , kept the same process, and have gone from that Mugen, to a Losi, and will now be running them in my new Tekno EB48.3. At less than half the price of ProTek, better performance, and longer life, it's a no brainer.

Charging at 40amps?? Over 6c?!!... No wonder they're puffing... You're asked to leave any licensed track in the UK if you charge over 1c due to fire risk...

I use an icharger 308 duo, but still never go above 2c ever, and I've never puffed a lipo in 5 years.

Discharging at 40amps is not really stressing the lipo, the 100c draw is many times that. It's the charging at high C that will ruin your lipos. Most have a warning not to go above 5c at all.

Yeah when you are discharging and charging at 40amps plus really no battery is gonna last very long and even worse even you're gonna end up hurting someone. I hope ATLEAST you use a lipo sack not that that makes it any safer but I don't think a lot of people realize how violate these batteries can be. Yes lipos have completely changed RC industry but that's just not smart. Search online if you don't believe me

stock racing in the US forces people to charge at high amps to stay competitive with all the others.

I'm not that fast. Is charging at 20 amps okay for battery life to 4.22? (4.22 will put you at 4.20 b the time you are checked at the stand)...

Everyone has input on battery charging, just telling you what I do and what I have seen. If you plan to make the A main at any major race, you are discharging and charging like this in the US. As for the higher voltage, the newer lipo cells were designed for this and it is safe. Not legal at a Roar race but what is done at clubs that do not have voltage rules. Not saying everyone should follow this advice.

If you charge at 1c and make sure to store your lipo at the correct voltage, you should can probably get years out of a pack.

I just received 2 protec 5000 4s 100c packs from Amain. First thing I did was throw them on my cellpro power lab 8 to check the ir and first pack 1.2, 1.5, 1.0, 9.5 second pack 1.1, 1.8, 8.9, 1.4...... 1 junk cell in both right out of the box. Maybe I just have bad luck..... Anyone else checking the cells #'s? I have a thunder power on the way to compare.

Try cycling and running them before condemning them. I'm sure a cycle or two will give you better numbers. Checking IR right out of the box after the cells have been on the shelf really means nothing.

I will run em and see what happens. i have the cellpro hooked up to the computer so I will track it. I have a feeling that the ir on the 2 bad cells is not going to go lower instead I would guess it will only go higher.

Hey Jason.... I usually ask the manufacturer directly. Each Lipo mfg has different recommendation.

If you really want to charge at 20A... get this.

I own 2 Promatch Lipos and I don't see any difference in charging at 15A and 20A other than it charges faster. No difference in performance.

I recently got 4 SMC Race Formula Extremes and asked them if it's okay to charge at 20A....they said yes.
