What is the optimum temperature to store a battery at?

long term storage.. a refrigerate temps.. 36-45 degree F..at storage V of 3.85 or less.. I always go less and i have a few 12 year old batts....mine are stored at 38 df and 3.75 volts a cell..room temp is also ok

To be more precise; who was even using lipos in 2004?

For the OP, +1 for room temp, preferably in a lipo sack.
