What remote control and battery do I need?
 

So I'm new to rc cars. A friend gave me an old team associated rc10b2. It needs a remote, receiver, battery and charger to get it running again. What would be a good remote and receiver? How many channels do I need? What battery and charger should I get? Any info I could get would be appreciated. Thanks!

I personally think if you just wanna try this hobby out, you probably want to purchase middle end used equipment, a m11x is an excellent choice.
For battery and charger, you can just get a dirty cheap Lopo charger from skyrc or turning.
For lips battery, any brand would work imo, if you talk to people at your track, they might offer you some free battery. I am not kidding, I got at least 10 batteries from local racers, they are not perfect condition, but they work well enough when I started this hobby.

If you wanna get serious right off the bat, I would get m12/m12s radio
And icharger 406 duo.

I love my futaba 4PX radio but.... is little over $500. But you going to get a high quality 4 channel radio with all the bells and whistles. You can go an little more economical and pick a new or good used Spektrum DX4R or DX4S radio. and if you are going cheapo... Flysky radios are decent.

I picked up a used Futaba 3PL transmitter and receiver for $80 to get my friends son into racing. That's what I would recommend.

I'm not looking to spend too much since I'm just getting into it. I was kinda looking to start off cheap just to see if I like it first. I looked on ebay and found some for around $40. It's a Team Associated XP2G 2 Channel iFHSS 2.4ghz Radio & 4ch TRS403SSi Receiver 29215

Yes and it will be fine. You don't need anything expensive or fancy. Enjoy that B2! I have a B3 and love mine.

Since you are new to RC, I would not get lipo batteries. They are a bit of a hassel for a newbie and it would be easy for you to puff/ruin one. You can pick up a cheap nickel metal pack from Tower hobbies for less that $20 and get a charger that would charge it for about the same amount. I would also buy a can of Duratrax Powershot motor spray and pull the old, brushed motor out of the car and give it a clean.

Since you're just getting your feet wet, I wouldn't spend a ton of money. But i wouldn't buy junk either. Flysky GT2B radio, SPC or SMC lipos and a Hitec 44241 charger. $100-$120 for all, plus shipping and all good quality for the price.

If you don't go lipo batteries you won't ever fully enjoy it ... Just my opinion.

It's funny, we enjoyed RC cars long before lipos came out...Just sayin'....

I second the battery comment, Nimh can still be lots of fun. Once you go to lipo, that fun decreases a little!

I also don't agree with $300 and up radios (as a starter). Find an OEM 2.4ghz and have fun, I ran traxxas tq radios for years and have finally upgraded to a Futaba 4pls, but I don't know if the fun factor will really change much. Look at the new Traxxas TQ stuff or find a cheap used Futaba or Spektrum.

Lipos are NOT that hard to use or maintain, period!

And we've enjoyed them WAY more since they have!!...!

You cannot beat this radio for the price and what is included. Downside is the manual is in Japanese but its not that hard to pick up the basic adjustments. Ordered one for my son and it took about a week to arrive.

Just look into lipo batteries. Lipo would be a better purchase in the long run over nimh. Depending on the esc you will require a low voltage alarm or cut off. Depending on the punch "C rating" and run time "mAh" a lipo battery can cost 20.00 to 100.00. Something in the 30-40 dollar range would be recommended. As for a charger you can get a cooker for 25.00 or good charger for 100.00. Ive used a few Thunder AC6 cheep chargers in my day with no problems. I personally like my first charger, Hyperion EOS 0606i. I picked it up for 50.00 used. I still keep it around for a backup.

Oops, didn't mean that lipos lower fun factor, quite the opposite, nimh are fun, until you have experienced Lipo, then going back to nimh is much more difficult.

I have officially converted completely to Lipo in the past month, but that wasn't until I had a replacement for my boys 2wd stampede. Couldn't justify the upgrade from brushed/old esc in order to convert.

Just keep in mind that as you buy into this hobby, buy wisely and plan for the jump to lipos. In other words, don't go buy a non-Lipo charger. If you do that, you will be fine.
