how much is to much or to little...
hi RC dude's i'm asking the question how much charge is to much...i'm about to buy some more LIPO battery's for my RC8.2 and my LOSI 2.0E they both have MAMBA MONSTER"S 2200 kv set up's. now my last lipo's started to balloon alittle after a while which i've heard is quite normal but i'm trying to prolong the life of the new one's i'm buying so im using a HYPERION EOS 0615I dual charger. now i always pressumed you plug in the lipo and the charger doe's the rest as long as the setting's are right ' and i'm pretty sure they are ' i have TURNIGY NANOTECH's 14.4 VOLT 5.0 MAH... 45- 90 c discharge BATTERY'S that i'm charging at 5.0 amps i'm sure they discharge in my veichle at 3.2 v that's what my CASTLE PROGRAMMING CARD IS SET AT..... but do i charge these things all the way to %100 to the TCS...terminal capacity selection or do i charge to a lower % like %95 or lower ..the question is am i over charging them or not cause i'm not to sure how much is to much when it come's to lipo's AND THEY COST A FORTUNE....thank's to who ever answer's.

4.2 volts per cell max.... your charger should be fine at charging them to full capacity
I would set my LVC a lot higher... SPC recommends like 3.5v per cell..... I had a nano-tech, it was the biggest piece of junk battery I have owned... puffing is not normal -- you either charged it, and let it sit charged, or you over-discharged it..... if you are going to store your battery, you need to put it in storage mode, you can't store them fully charged |
Charger's are rated for the primordial times of lipo with 4.20V top voltage.
There are a new ones that says that are HV that charge lipos to 4.35V but need to use specific HV lipos. That is a new business and those lipos do not have the life of a normal lipo. Less then a quarter. A thing that will dye soon in my opinion...just like those things CDInteractive by Philips.... in the 90's... So back to normal lipos.... Always balance charge them? right? Storage mode is simply in 3.85v range. Just storage charge or balance charge a full fack and play on the car half the time....lipos will be on 3,80v something. Ready to store for months... If leave a batery fully charged for more then 3 days...she is dying fast....could sweell faster and not holding charge anymore.... Always charge them on a lipo bag or at least on concrete floor with nothing to burn close by. THERE ARE HOUSES that burned cause of silly lipos charging anatended....whatch youtube, just like to see rc's...to see burn houses cause of lipos.... Ever think not to put matches close to Nitro or Gas? Well, lipos are same thing in another aspect's...always balance charge and always 3,85v for storage and in a lipo bag, or metal container! :( |
ok thanks guy's.... well the charger will charge anything to %100 the point is,is it good to charge the battery all the way i know my charger work's fine hyperion is a good brand and jimbo what would you suggest in the way of lipo's i'm all ear's when it come's to new brand's you know what i drive and what set up i have....i usually buy from HOBBY KING.

TCS is a great feature. The last bit of charging takes quite a bit of time for little added capacity. Turning it down to 90 or 95% will reduce charge times with little loss of run time. Helps pack life, as sitting at full charge stresses a lipo. Some chargers have a fast charge setting which is similar, iChargers can use a higher end current setting, etc.
Agree puffing is not normal, and raising the cut off will likely help the most. Lipos drop off quickly at the end of a run, in most cases a slightly higher cutoff doesn't reduce run time much. Better yet stop earlier, as soon as any power decrease is noticed. Packs shouldn't come off with much if any noticeable heat, should be at least 3.7V per cell after sitting for a while (resting voltage), for best life. Agree proper storage helps a lot. Charge just before use, don't leave them sitting fully charged. Or discharged. Definitely not in heat, hot sun, parked car, etc. Store in a cool place. |
ok thank's DAVE H for ya input..... i might do that ill programme the discharge abit higher on my castle card so my battery will obviously shut down quicker hence giving me longer life cause these thing's do take a beating i love the whole electric thing with RC cause i gave up on nitro long ago, but i still need to learn more, electric can be confusing i'm sure i'm not the only one out there who think's so ... i often wonder who was the genious behind the LIPO battery.

Over-discharging is the killer or discharging to the lower limits like 3-3.2V per cell. for racing this is not an issue because you do not use much and then you are re-charging. But the typical "RTR non-racer" guy for some reason likes to run his car until it no longer moves and with a low LVC value.

thanks rick....what LIPOS do you recommend or think are the best to put in a RC8.2 e or a losi 2.0e you can see what battery's i've been using i wouldn't mind trying some other brands.
