Not to jump in on this thread bit does any one have any experience with the new smc RF 160 ESC? The price for there ESC motor and programmer is only 180. Bit I haven't herd anything about them yet

Well i know im wrong but when i hear hobbywing it screams nitrorcx and their stuff was just..... hmmmmmm.... ill never buy stuff there again. I hear great things about hobbywing here and in other threads too. i do run an xerun 4700kv on my 4wd sct and after back and fwd between tekin pro4 and HW (literally swapping motor back and fwd) i think the HW is a beast. i might give a try to a HW esc. which model you guys recommend for mod motor 7.5T?

One consideration is what type of servo you are using. Is it a high voltage servo? One advantage of the RSX and the Reedy Blackbox is that they can run higher output voltages than other speed controls.

I swear by Speed Passion Reventon Pro 1.1 EX's now, super easy program box, 140A, no issues with Spektrum/Savox combinations either.

All depends on your budget!
Top end: Reedy Black Box or Orion R10
Mid Range: SMC
Low range: Trakstar Turbo 120 (about 1/4 the price of the Reedy or Orion)

I have Speedpassion and Tekin RSX.
I like both, but Speedpassion has zero customer service. I'm still waiting for a paid for replacement to show up from March of last year. Even when I get in touch with them somehow and they promise to do something. They don't.
When my current speedpassions go poof, I will get more Tekins.

Tekin.

The stock spec esc (its the one I have) is rated to handle down to a 5.5T motor on 2S, so in a 1/10 2wd buggy I don't think you would have an issue at all.

Though, on the cheap if you can find it, I would give the V2.1 version a look as well, especially if you don't need all these various new options the V3.1 has. Seen them for about $75 shipped or less new from a few authorized dealers for the V2.1 120A.

If you want to try a moderately priced esc , check out the smc 120 or the hobby wing 120a 2.1 . Both come in under $100.00 , just over $100 with a programmer

This is where I get HW stuff from and I couldn't be more happy with the site. Pretend warranty doesn't exist though , they should really be considered disposable. One thing I can say about tekin , is even after the warranty period expires , they will replace a esc for a low price , usually less than what a comparable off brand costs new .

fivepointnine 02-24-2016 06:39 AM

Tekin has amazing customer service, I had an ESC replaced and they just sent me out a new one no questions asked (in warranty period). Pretty much every other brand I just pretend like warranty does not exist like another poster stated.

JRSlash 02-24-2016 06:57 AM

Wao, I didn't know the HW 3.1 was $190 ESC. I like it tho. Now to decide between the blackbox or the HW. I had Speedpassion before and the thing I didn't like is that if I wanted to program the esc from stock (blinky) to a mod I had to plug it to a computer and change the firmware and I have no reverse on any firmware except for one of the mod firmware. Also the fact that after it burned up I was just SOL. I did like the trackstar I have (gen2 120A) but left a bad taste after it burned up for unknown reason despite having 5 star reviews. I might install the warranty replacement for now and save some $$$ to get a good warranted ESC. I learned with time that warranty is really important in this hobby, and learned the hard way too.

yeah tekin does have great customer service, no doubt on that from what I have seen too. I just don't like that the ESC doesn't have a handheld programmer similar to what HW and Viper and others have and I don't have a cell phone here.

Warranty matters to me too, but the service tied to the warranty is equally important. Its kind of like that scene from Tommy Boy about having a guarentee on the box. Give it a view sometime, I hate to say it but that is kind of how I felt after my go around with HW at least from the perspective of their customer service. Products though that work, excellent.

Also, do you need the high end V3.1?

the incubus 02-24-2016 07:52 AM

Speed Passion ESC's can be programmed from Mod to Blinky using the program box just like any other quality ESC, no computer required. I just did so at the track 2 weeks ago.

I say if you already have a replacement ESC you don't need to dole out cash one, use it and see how it goes this time around. Today most of these things are manufactured in high volumes in China so the failure rate is about the same for most brands, and for the most part the vast majority of ESC's last quite a long time. My Reventon Pro is the only ESC to present with an odd issue as of late which is sputtering but since it was in my daughter's car, I just scooped up a LNIB Justock on here for $35.

I don't get how so many people swear by this excellent customer service yet I was shown anything but, and I had 4 of their top of the line ESC's.
