Tekin Hotwire - Android Tablet

Im in need of some information for a Android tablet,
I run a Gen2 RX8 & RSX for a while now & normally use my laptop to use the Hotwire which is ok at home but not really practical at the track.
My phone & tablet run on windows 8.1RT so are no good for the hotwire, so I've been looking for a cheap Android tablet so i can take to the track.
I have been going through the threads in here but cant seem to find a definite answer to what works & what wont, & as i don't use Android its a bit confusing to what system i require.
So any information or links would be great.

Thanks Sean.

I personally haven't found any yes or no info. It works for most but then some. It is confusing because my samsung s4 worked then my s5 worked until newest update then it quit working. My samsung tab does not nor never has. Love tekin starting to hate android.

Thanks for the reply, its basically what i have found. some do some don't. don't do the upgrade do the upgrade. I love the tekin gear but its a pain to lug a laptop around just to change the settings and use the data logging, which is a great feature but no good when your at home. The biggest problem is that im the only one who runs tekin at the local track so trying to find out what Android device works is the main thing.

Using Desktop had problems with Windows 8-8.1, Windows 10 works flawlessly. Microsoft Surface just doesn't operate as well or not at all.. Smartphones and tablets they will work. Just DL the HW Beta on Tekins websight if you use a Smartphone. As for Tablets Samsung tablets, LG, or HP works, 7". 8" or 10.1 works well. Make sure the Android above v 4.7 or above. Most Smartphones are Android 5 & 5.1 you wont have trouble.

Tablets find a used one on Amazon or Ebay that runs Android v5.0.2, you work fine. I purchase a LG G Pad 8" work well for my Tekins Hotwire and my DJI Phantom 3 Professional, it work great!!! and found it on Amazon for $120.Just know the Version of Android.

Works well with my Laptop HP x360 Windows 10 upgraded.

I've had no problems with windows 8 - 10, i know it wont work on my Microsoft surface tablet as it runs 8.1 RT, already tried that.
I borrowed a ASUS Zenpad which runs Android 5.0.2, loaded up the HW App,
but all it does is go into demo mode and cant find the HW. tried it with gen1 & gen2 hotwire & various OTG cables, but no success.
I don't really want to spend loads on a device just to run a hotwire trackside, or buy Android devices to see if they work.

3 Attachment(s)
My desktop works fine. And of coarse use my mobiles, smartphone and Tablets. Use HP Stream 7 & 8" Tablets that uses Windows 8.1 upgraded to Windows 10, LG G Pad & LG G3 Smartphone. All works great. Stream tablet purchased as used, at $120 each, LG Tablet used @ $100. all were good deals on Amazon.

First photo is HP Stream8 Windows 10, next 2 with HP 8 G2 Android 5.1. Make sure you delete Hotwire off your Tablet and Smartphone and reboot. Redownload at Tekins Websight, HW Beta a Google will be outlined, Complete the DL.

Just use your Smartphone, you don't want to spend on Laptop or Tablets.

7" Winbook tw700

works great for running the Tekin Hotwire program.
only downside is the hotwire window is very small on the screen.

I picked it up for $42 for an open box unit. came with a warranty.
Check for a Micro Center near you to get the open box deal. Still available at the Richardson store in TX.

Thanks for the link, I've tried 3 different Android devices now & none of the have worked, so it looks like a cheap windows tablet will be the way to go. I can see why there's so many threads for the Android app for the hotwire now.

Android is a great platform but as some of you have noted, not all are created the same.

A few recent updates to the OS have causes some OTG connectivity issues and if you do some google searching you can find the Android guys are working on it. A recent bluetooth issue has also come up with the most recent 5.1 update.

That being said we more often than not see bad or non OTG cables being used. This is the most common reason for the App and Hotwire not working on any known working device.

This cable works perfect and is the most common format for most of todays android devices:

Note that this only works on the Hotwire, and will not allow you to plug in other USB devices like thumb drivers or keyboards, etc.

If you're having issues, post up your device, current OS version and I'll do my best to walk you through a few tests, etc.

I use an RCA tablet I bought at Walmart for $38. After looking at an iPad, the screen on an rca will make you go blind, but it's a perfect size and works with the Hotwire.

Samsung s5 5.1.1.1 worked great before this update. Will Tekin be working on a app for apple or just sticking to android ?

Tubster 01-07-2016 01:40 PM

Thanks for the reply Randy, the cable that you listed is the same one that i have been using, i found it in one of your other posts on using android.
After going through loads of posts on the subject i decided to go the windows route as it seemed to be the safest bet to buying a new tablet & there wont be any issues with it not running on the device.

Tekin, PLEASE come out with a program card and end this madness

hotrod87 01-09-2016 06:37 AM

A card would be nice as long as it's not like the castle one. Surprised tekin hasn't came up with a tablet that comes with hotwire preloaded and has the cables reeady to go in a single package.

i got a tw700 tablet for this exact reason, i needed something to take with me thats not huge, i didnt want to spend much more than 30 bux, so i trolled ebay for a while and found a good deal

its a cool tablet but way under spec'd, cant really do much "computing" with it, but if your only using it for hotwire, other esc software, and maybe browsing, its pretty cool... full size usb port, and full version of windows 8, not mobile.... works fantastic with the hotwire, i think theres another version that has more ram, had mine for about 7 months.. so far so good
