Tekin Esc troubles

I have gone through 5 tekin rx8 gen2 esc in my Tekno Truggy, I'm using the 2250 motor the package came with. Today my 6th one failed in a similar way to all the others. I bought tekin because it's said to be the best but this is getting a little rediculous.

The rest of my setup is
- savox servo 1256 @6v
And or 1267 @7.4v
-Spektrum sr2000 receiver w/ "glitch buster"

Is there better options? Is Orion as good or better for competitions? I don't do any crazy bashing and don't crash a lot compared to other so race with but my most recent tekin case has basically broken at all the screw hole bosses on the corners.

With that said the people at tekin have been VERY nice and helpful and I've only paid for 1 esc, the original one. I just can't see why I'm having such troubles. Any input will be helpful in either sticking it out with tekin or switching to Orion as those seem to be the best sensored esc's.

Thanks in advance.

So the case is breaking or are there other problems? If it's just the case breaking you can replace the case for fairly cheap. And I suggest using the kyosho gel material to mount it in the future.

ScotE 11-27-2015 11:10 AM

This is the first time the case broke, I use 3m VHB double sided tape which has a decent soft boundary but I'll get some of that mounting gel... Idk if my reply went through, (new to forums) but all the others failed similarly, 3 had bad bec, and 2 had different failures, not sure what, they replaced all of them.

I have a Tekin RX8 in my Tekno truggy and RX8 Gen2 in my other Tekno vehicles and I haven't had a single issue. I think the problems you are having are outliers, at least hopefully. Maybe the 7th time is the charm.
I also use the Kyosho Zeal on all my ESCs.
If you do switch ESC'sI know from the Tekno threads that people seem to like the Hobbywing product.

ScotE 11-27-2015 02:01 PM

That's why I got the tekin system, I have some friends that have never had a problem in there 1/8 buggies.... Do you mean a bad batch problem or something in my setup I use 50 80 100c -4s batteries so I don't think I'm even close to the limits of the system.

The gearing is stock 44 spur and 14 or 16 pinions

I have had a run of them go bad, where they lose power but the hotwire still sees and talks to them. It is not the switch, on at least one I found a component on the very bottom of the lower circuit board that separated on one side, and pressing it back on the board to get contact would wake the ESC up.

My conclusion is that chassis slap might be taking a toll on things so I started to address my setup to reduce that as much as I could. Now time will tell. The other possible fix would be if Tekin put a pad in the case like they have with the capacitors to absorb the the g-shock on that heavy component I had come lose, instead of the force being taken in the solder / tabs.

Scott e , the tekin is not happy with hard , flat landings . If your breaking cases it seems this may be a problem. Do you have the o-rings under the esc tray on the tekno installed so it floats the way its supposed to ? How is this esc mounted ? Are you taking lots of sharp landing in the flats ?

I'd like to see a picture of your install if you can post one up. That's more failures than you should be having regardless of what you're doing here.

I'd also like to know gearing, and what battery(s) you're using.

Nothing new here.

This new Tekin ain't the legendary brand from yesteryear and I personally had 2 RS Pro ESC's present with problems and at JConcepts Supercup a couple years ago, not one, not two, but THREE 8th scale buggies simply stopped working without warning in the A-main. One simply died and no signs of damage but the other two overheated to the point the posts literally unsoldered from he ESC completely.

On my RS Pro's I was experiencing Brown Outs randomly and I'd be doing really well and suddenly my cars would dart to one side or take off and not respond to inputs and I was advised by Tekin people on here as well as a few locals that I might want to try a Glitch Buster because they all felt my Savox servo's draw were the root cause of the issue on both cars. So I bought them installed, went out and immediately the issue persisted. They them suggested it was my Radio so I borrowed my buddy's MT-4 and the issue was still present so that ruled out the radio.

I then took a Reventon R ESC I had on my son's car and installed it and the issue disappeared immediately.

When I told Tekin Reps about my issue they insisted it wasn't their ESC even though I eliminated their product and miraculously no more issues. I promptly ripped them out of my cars, sold them and bought Reventon Pros and a couple Hobbywing ESC's. Been over 2 years now and never a single glitch or brown out. Sad to say but after only ever running Tekin faithfully, to the point I still have my old 411P on my almost 30 year old Andy's Carbon Composite RC10, I will never own another Tekin product again.

This new Tekin ain
Blah blah blah....

Hated every Hobbywing I have bought, watched many go up in flames at our
local track, Customer service is a joke. Not really that happy with my Orion
10.1 either.

You could actually offer up something helpful instead of just using this thread as a soapbox Rob

If your killing RX8s like this you either have no strain relief in your wiring or your
mounted incorrectly to the chassis( no esc does well being thrown around by
the wires).

gticlay 12-02-2015 10:19 AM

Well, my Orion blew apart this summer in my E-buggy so it's not just Tekin. There's a reason so many of the cars have a special place for the ESC and companies are coming out with special damping tape.

madmikepags 12-02-2015 10:48 AM

your motors rotor might be out of sync, have you tried another motor?

Hi all thank you for the responses.

With the most recent ESC I have mounted it on the Kyosho mounting gel and yes the O-rings are in place under the plate. One of the local tracks I go to does have some hard flat landings but I did only break one of these cases. The other failures occurred on high by full throttle situations.

Randy,
Batteries are
Dynamite reaction 4s 80c
Racers edge prime 4s 100c
Lectron pro 4s 50c

Gearing is 44/15 or 16

I will set up a photo account later so I can post pictures. I would say there's plenty of strain relief in the wires and nothing has come loose after running .

Thanks again
Scot

You can upload photos to the RCTech site and attach them to your posts too. ;)

Excuse my ignorance but I'm never on forums, can I do this from my phone?
