Default Radio upgrade?

I started out in the hobby with a FlySky GT3B and love it. I've upgraded it with a lipo, custom firmware, and a ball bearing in the wheel. But the time has come to upgrade to something a bit better. I've been looking at Spektrums, Airtronics, Futaba, etc but I have no idea what's good. And there are so many different Spektrum models that i have no clue what they all offer.

The main thing I'm looking for is range, lipo or the ability to mod it to add lipo, and fairly cheap receivers for it. I'd pick up a used one to save money. Looking for around $100-$150.

If you add a 100$ to your budget I would strongly recommend the Graupner x-8n radio. It is great.

The recievers are 45$. I have been using it for an year now and I had not a single glitch. It comes with a 1s Lipo. On one charge I get cca 20 hours runtime.

I can reccomend adding about $50 to your budget and getting an Airtronics MT4:

I love mine. Improved my lap times and helped me with consistency. There are a few options for lipo or life batteries. Only downside is that receivers are on the expensive side. You can pick up an RX371 for about $60.

I can also recommenced their MXV model that is in your price range. A buddy has one, I have used it a couple of times and it feels to be good quality. Just lacks a few of the features of the MT4.

I just upgraded from the MXv to the MT4s and I think its worth it.
I am very happy with the MT.
My radio path was gt3b to a mxv to the mt4s. I hated gt3b....

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll look into the MT4 and see if any used ones pop up. Unfortunately I can't stretch the budget any. And I really like my GT3B for the value, just ready to step up.

The Airtronics MX-V is very good value for the price. Bought one for my son's SC truck and it's been performing flawlessly. Good range, light and solid connection to the car. It's not up to my M12's level, but it's very good and miles beyond the FlySky.

A used MT4 would also be a good option.

Look into the Futaba 4PLS. Great quality and has tons of features. Top of the time receivers are about $40.

The MX-V is a tough little radio, but I'd probably try to find a used Futaba 3pk/4pk or get a new 3pl, the 4pl is quite popular and has some nice features but in my experience it's quite fragile particularly the steering stops which are molded into the case, and can break if you sneeze funny.

I looked at Airtronics and the receivers seem to be super expensive, like $50-$100. That's almost the cost of a used MT4 or a new MX-V.

Yes this is an issue with the Airtronics. The cheep receivers are big and slow and the small and fast recievers are expensive. While the mx-v is nice radio, it is really not the fastest one - same speed as GT3b which is slow.

Again there is a thread about the Graupner x-8n on this forum, the most underrated radio in my opinion. Cheap and fast receivers, coming with lipo. I really cant believe it is not more populars - apart from not been massively propagated...

4PLS uses R304 receivers (cheapest ones) which are also the fastest ones (faster than FASST). If you upgrade in the future to a 4PX unit, the good news is the receivers are the same.

Thanks I'll check the Graupner out. EDIT: Definitely can't afford a new one.

The Airtronics Receiver 94524 is a great little 2fhss, 3 channel receiver and it is not slow at all! it i can't tell the difference in response between it and my 949010 4fhss receiver. I use it in my second car and its never giving me trouble. You can get one for around 50 bucks on line and as far the Airtronics MT4 goes it is a great radio with super response times and you can get the whole set up new for around 200 bucks its 50 bucks more than youre budget, and its worth it!

I used a 4PLS for a year before upgrading to my 4PX, great quality on both and have never had a problem on either. 4PX has faster response time that is noticeable
