Bad Sensor Board or ESC?
Picked up a used Tekin Pro4 4600kv motor and a used Hobbywing SCT Pro ESC here on rctech. Hooked them up and having an issue. Simple really. The motor won't turn when the sensor wire is plugged in. The motor actually feels pretty smooth without the sensor wire. I tried 3 sensor wires, one was new out of the package. Everything is bound/calibrated correctly. Could it be?
1) Bad sensor board on the motor? OR 2) Maybe the Hobbywing ESC needs a firmware update and it can't 'find' the motor? I ordered a program box yesterday for this ESC. |
Or 3) Bad sensor port on the ESC
Do you have a different motor you could try hooking up to the ESC or a different ESC to that motor to try? |

yeah, that's true. well i do have an extra reedy 8.5t (for my b5m), do you think it would ok to test/solder up that motor with the sct pro esc?

You're on the right track with your diagnosis method, but it definitely sounds like a bad hall-effect sensor on the sensor board in the motor, pretty common failure if something is going to fail in there.
|
Or 4) faulty H bridge circuit in the ESC. When this happens the ESC can drive the motor without the sensor cable but not with it.
The "Another Motor" should help determine the fault. |
Well looks like it's the speeder. I tried 2 other motors same thing. Works fine without sensor wire plugged in. When I plug the sensor in works for a few seconds and then stops. All 3 motors. Could it be the firmware on the esc? Just read on another forum somebody had same issue and using an older 1.0 firmware worked.

From my experience the SCT Pro seems to fault at the sensor port quite regularly. (Have encountered it myself as have some other racers locally)

New SCT PRO ESC or used Tekin RX8? I'm a noob and will be racing once a month probably (Tekno sct410) |

Thanks. Do you know if it can be repaired? Or is a new one in my future? Lol

Even though you just got a probably bad (used) one, I'd still go with a new HW over a used RX8. You get a warranty this time and based on my observations, when something does go wrong with a HW, it's something like the sensor port going bad, not good, but if you're at the track, you could still at least run your main sensorless instead of going home. When the RX8's fail, it tends to involve the release of the "magic smoke." As well, you said you already ordered the HW program box so that's nice to have.
90th post! woo hoo |
Even with the Sensor Port issue, I still think the HW is more reliable than the RX8, have seen a few of those pop in my time! Plus an SCT Pro with a busted sensor port can still run sensorless, they're a great sensorless esc for a Monster Truck basher on 4s!

Well it looks like a bad sensor port on the ESC. Did a firmware update (old and new version), same issues. Works without sensor wire, not with other than a few seconds and stops. I'll run it for now sensorless but will probably get a new SCT Pro. Seems to be more bang for your buck. Thanks guys.
