whats the best way?
how do the pros do it?

You could try fold and shrink wrap.

I just buy new lead ends and crimp them on after I shorten the wire. Problem is its permanently shorter, unless you want to solder to the board a longer wire (which isn't that hard)

Just got these and they crimp like factory. You'll also need the ends (second link).
