Default Transmitter/Receiver Question

Hello, I'm fairly new to RC systems. I have a secondhand Futaba 35mhz Challenger Transmitter with a crystal with the frequency 35.040. I'm also in possession of a JR NER-649S Receiver with a 35.040 crystal. I assumed both would work fine because of the matching crystals and the fact the transmitter and receiver are both 35mhz. However, I didn't get a response from the receiver. My question is, are transmitters, crystals and receivers compatible with multiple brands, or are they only functional among one brand? Thanks in advance.

RX and TX crystals are usually cut to different frequencies however labelled as one frequency as a matching pair (for RC use)

so you will find a matching working pair of crystals the TX and RX should be on different frequencies by about 400KHz

You must be in Europe since 35mhz isn't allowed for use in the US. I'm quite sure the frequency between the transmitter and receiver are actually different. First if they were the same, you wouldn't have crystals labeled TX and RX. They would be interchangeable. Something about the RX crystal being 3rd or 5th overtone from the TX.

Best bet is to purchase a new set.
