Motor poles?

Why do some motors have more poles than others? What are poles? Or any link you think is a good explanation.

In the brushless motors the number of poles is simply the number of "magnets" motor have...

You can identify by hand...withou opening a motor to see the internals!
-2 poles is easy to identify by hand... spin the shaft by hand..she moves free right?
-4 poles or more.... spin the shaft by hand... YEAH, right.... :ha:

The more poles "mags" the more power(torque) motor has!

-This is a pic of a 4 pole motor and a 8 pole motor generally from Rc helis. Same as for rc cars...

-This pic shows a 2 pole motor shaft... you can see only one cause it's warped in some sort of tape...but inside there is 2 mags only!

The motor with 4 poles has a tendency to generate more torque compared to 2 poles same volume and kv rating one. That means for same rpm it can generate more power output since the power = torque x rpm. 4 pole motors generally used in 8th scale buggy and truggy due to their weights. However, with the existence of high weight ( around 7lbs) 4wd short course trucks with 2s lipo, they become popular in last 3 or 4 years.

Actually it's only one cylindrical magnet. Any magnet naturally has a north pole on one side and a south pole on the other so you only need one magnet for two poles. In theory you could make a four pole motor with just two magnets but is a bit tricky.
