TEKIN vs VIPER

Who wins ?

I was buying a new ESC and my choices were TEKIN Rx8 vs VIPER VTX8 and I have chosen VIPER because IT is WATER PROOF.

Any comparison between the two?

If you already got one, why bother with a thread? I know you are looking to get people to say the Viper is better but for my money, I'd go with the RX8.

Unless you are bashing all the time, waterproof isnt that big a selling point (and its more like water resistant btw. Be careful about fully submerging)

HobbyWing Xerun FTW. :)

I am basher Not a racer. I have heard many good things about the RX8. I was going to get one in Amain.com and I saw 3 ESC that I liked:

Vortex R8.1 Pro (not available until 2015)
Tekin RX8
Viper VTX8

Comparing the three, Viper was the only one Waterproof.

I started researching about the VTX8 and some people said it is the best and the Standard to follow.
Any comments?

I know nothing about the vtx8 but the vtx10 and vtx1 are incredibly underused speedos. They are really, really good.

Everyone has their preference and will try to sell you on what they run. I've had some problems with RX8. I haven't really seen anyone be successful runing the VTX8. I tried the R8 Pro and its noticeably smoother power delivery than the RX8.

For the price though the Hobbywing is VERY hard to beat.

Apparently some of you only get your views from advertisements. Ive seen more burned up tekin rx8 speedos than any other.
After mine caught fire at the track everyone there was asking me if it was a tekin. Because they've had the same thing happen. Then on another track's facebook page there was a dozen pictures of burned rx8 pictures with comments like, more tekin timebombs.

I went with the vtx8. It has a lot more programability to it for sure. And it definitely is built better. My rx8 broke in half and caught fire. Due to a crash. Because its built from flimsy cheap plastic. Just look at how the fan mounts. They didnt even bother making it a full hole for the screws. It wpuld make a good esc in the $80-100 price range but its too much of a flimsy pos to be $200

Viper all the way

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I have seen RX8 reviews and people complaining about 200$ Non waterproof Cheap Plastic.

TeamOrion was the other one made with full aluminium but Viper was the only one waterproof. So I finally decided for Viper because I am basher. I hope That I have made the best choice, because I don't want to spend 200$ every day in RC electronics

Everyone will have there opinion as they ALL have there issues from time to time. I have RX8 gen 2's in both my 1/8 Ebuggy and my 4x4 SC, both have been problem free and work great, many others run them as well locally, have yet to see one catch on fire or blow up :weird: With that said do they ever have issues?? Of course being electronics they all do. There is one guy at the track that was running a Viper VTX8 in his 4x4 SC and he liked the feel of the esc but I know it went back to Viper once or twice because of issues. Good luck with your purchase I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Big point for me was the dual drive mode. The scenario is sensor wires, which going bad is a common occurance. If a sensor wire goes bad or falls out with a RX8, the esc switches to a sensorless mode, the VTX8 just shuts down, and refuses to work.

I am using an RX8 gen 2 in my Desc 410, and it has been fine. I really like the tuning options, and 7.4 volts for the servo is nice too.

I suppose most Tekin "smoky issues" caused by crappy soldering job. '6sec rule' is very vital when you're making connection between wire and solder post, and many people (even Squirrel on his videos) leave tip more than 10sec on posts. Bad iron tip, no flux, too short wires causing stress - all that can't prolong life of any esc.

Yes! This is absolutely true and should be taken into consideration when discussing electronic failures. When I came back to the hobby a few years back I ruined a Novak GTB2 by trying to change the wires - held the iron on too long and the esc never worked right afterwards. During the same time period I also overheated the sensor board on a Novak Ballistic motor by holding the iron on the tabs for too long. Since then I have owned several esc's and motors and have experienced no problems. The difference? I just finally learned how to solder correctly.
