LED Pit Light

Looking for a protable pit light that folds up for easy transport. What are you guys using?

HBRob 09-30-2014 11:01 AM

Lots of people, including myself use an Ottlite. They have both an LED and florescent version. I use the florescent myself. You can get them from craft stores (Joannes, Michaels, Hobby Lobby) or Amazon.

I use the MuchMore Aluminum 12V Folding LED light and love it. Folds down nice and compact.

I have seen this one from hobby king, not sure how well it performs, but it is rechargeable. Pit Light

RCBuddha 09-30-2014 06:37 PM

I had a folding ott light for years. I now have this:

I've had that one for a few years now. It's inexpensive and sure takes a beating!

+1 Muchmore light.

I've had one for over a year and have never had a problem.

I also use one of the generic flouresant Ott light you can get at office supply stores. It works well, but the Muchmore is brighter, lighter and runs off 12volts.

EAMotorsports 10-02-2014 07:14 AM

The new GForce lights are smaller, lighter and brighter than the Much more units. They also have a parts tray built into the bottom.

EA, could the GForce banana plugs be changed to deans and plug a 3v lipo to power it?

This looks like a rebadged or knockoff OttLite, but $15 cheaper. Looks Florencent based on website.

I use an Ottlight that I got at Costco for super cheap and it works great. Only issue with it is that it lights up a small area, which is fine when I'm just working on my car(s) between heats.

What would be a good option for over head lighting in my hobby workshop at home? I've got the standard 60w bulbs in the shop, but I'd like to have a bit more light focused onto my table.

Tom, it's supposed to be a "full spektrum light". I think it is fluorescent. Works well, and the price is good.

For a while I had a cheap 6' Flouresant Shop Light, but I found the direct light to be too harsh for working on RC. I took 2 good 4' flouresant fixtures (with soft light bulbs) and mounted them upside down in a custom box near the ceiling that aims the light at the ceiling/upper wall above my workbench to direct the light up and towards the wall. The light I get is reflected/diffused and much softer and evenly distributed. Quick, cheap fix (I think I've got maybe $45 in the whole thing and it fully lights the whole room.)
Tip: walls and ceiling need to be a somewhat light color (dark colors absorb light.)

Thanks RCB & all that replied.
I currently have an old fluorescent one that has worked well for 10 years. It is old & the fixture itself is just about had id so that looks like a good option.

But I might try one of these. (yes I will have to make a stand)

Has anyone used one yet?

Nice find!

speeddaddy 10-09-2014 06:27 AM

You could make your own pit light. I took a old light I bought from the big box store years ago for 19.00 and took out all the guts and the weak 13 watt florescence bulb and added 54 extra bright led's which now I can run it off my power supply. The only bad thing about it, is now I have to put on sunscreen before I turn it on. LOL

Speeddaddy, your attachment doesn't seem to pull-up. Can you look at it, as I'd be interested in seeing what you put together

I made a post last year about that light. except it was made by tensor and they were selling them for $10 shipped.
I didn't know they had a small supply of them and I guess I bought them all:lol:

I'll never buy a LED desk lamp again. the one I got at home depot lasted about 6 months and 1/2 the leds were dead. it started out flickering until they wouldnt come on anymore. I paid like $45 for that pos too.
at least these florescent lights have replaceable bulbs. and you can get them in different light spectrum styles. they came with a "full spectrum" style bulb. about as close to real sunlight as you can get it looks like.

I actually remember your post/thread, how funny. I got the officemax link from another thread, this one to be exact.

The lights I bought from officemax have been working perfectly, and the price is reasonable.

Any pics with it lit up? Looks like a great idea.

dan_vector 10-11-2014 10:27 PM

I have the muchmore and the new skyrc led pit lights. Both are excellent and fold up to fit in my pit box easily. Both take next to nothing to run off my powersupply either! The muchmore looks nicer but the skyrc seems to be slightly brighter.

I know it's an old thread but pit lights come and go..
Has anyone good or bad to say about the Arrowmax pit lamp? It looks great but how does it work and how long does the battery last?

I've had one for a little while and it's not bad. Looks good, folds up nicely and gives decent (not great) light. It's enough to augment poor lighting but not enough to use as a sole source of light.

Thanks! I want it for it to help when I have a pit space with my back to the lights and cast a (partial) shadow on the table, and for making sure I leave nothing important there at the end of the day. Any comment on battery life?

Mate I haven't used it for long enough to run through a full battery cycle so can't help you there. It charges through micro-usb so I always carry a portable power bank in my hauler. Worst case scenario if your lamp goes flat you can plug in the power source! :D

dtr 12-29-2016 03:01 PM

It's a good sign that it worked all the while you needed it :) Worst case is when they turn off the aggregator too early or if my power strip is full, neither too serious.
