Power supply question.

Alright guys, might be a newbie question but I know you guys can help, I'm getting the x4 charger and needing a power supply, do I need 20 amp for 5 amps a port or is that pushing it? Should I go 30 just to be safe? Trying to read up but not finding much. Thanks!

Bigger is better in the world of power supplies. Now, remember that it is unlikely that you will always be doing 4 packs at 5 amps all the time so the power supply will rarely see 20 amps anyways.

30 amps opens up the possibility for more powerful chargers in the future.
I would go 30 unless there is a screaming price difference.

You can pick up converted server power supplies that will push 50 amps for around $75. These work great.

I like to use a simple rule of thumb of going 20% higher rated PS than the highest rated unit that I'm gonna power. I don't like running stuff flat out. A 30A power supply is a very good size that'll serve you very well.

Be advised that converted computer/server power supplies can be noisy due to their cooling fans running at high rpm. While this isn't an issue in a data center/server room, it can be annoying in a more quiet setting.

Add: to be more specific, some smaller rack mount servers have fairly short power to save space inside the server case. These types of power supplies often have smaller fans that usually run at a higher rpm. Larger servers usually have larger physical power supplies with larger fans and aren't usually as loud.

I've used converted PSU's in the past and they've been fine. Personally didn't notice it being overly noisy. I did however 'upgrade' to an RC type power supply and I'm glad I did to be honest.

Thanks for the replies...I've always just used an onyx charger , never had to worry about a power supply. I'll look around at the different ones you guys mentioned and see what I come up with
