Questions?? Traxxas TQi blew up but working?

I've just connected a fully charged battery pack to the tqi, noticed a noise and smell coming out of it... turned it off and opened it up - there was one burned circuit thingy.
It was connected at the right polarity, battery was at 7.5 something volt when it was charged (I even connected it to the radio hours after that).

So I dunno what the hell happened. Seems to work ok though in the 2 minutes of testing after the incident. Is it fine to continue using it?

I would contact Traxxas, I hate to be the one to say you did not need that part that caught on fire.

looks like a blown up solid state cap
they dont go bad on their own, odds are the transistor next to it fried and took it out

contact traxxas for rma

edit: looks like it runs on 4 aa (4.8-6v)
7.4v may have been too much for it

ahh that might be true... bought this second hand and came the way it is. In the few months I've used it its been fine though.
Unfortunately buying new would probably be much faster & cheaper than rma from Australia, luckily just the dock shouldn't be that expensive.

I haven't even gotten a reply for a mmm warranty claim :P

if your going to use a 7.2 or 2s lipo pack on the controller, you should really use a 7805 (5v voltage regulator) with it

if you or a friend can solder, they are easy to hook up

heatsink wont be needed, since the controller will be under 1a draw
they are good for upto around 35v, and regulate 5v at 1a unheatsinked
