Lipo sparks (when plugged on a deans wired wrong) question

Long story short a friend well a guy online sent me a electronic combo and told me i just changed the connectors for deans.............

assuming it was wired correctly i tried to connect my brand new PACK AND WHAM SPARKORAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is my pack dead or just a spark thats it?

My theory is just that it sent electricity out..... now i re-wired everything as it was supposed to be but im scared to have wasted a 50$ pack just there!

ThePanda 04-09-2014 02:56 PM

Why not try it again? Rewired correctly?

hayabusafmw 04-09-2014 02:58 PM

yeah i know that but im scared of ''have messed up my battery'' don't want a fire thing happening ;)

better safe than sorry

hayabusafmw 04-09-2014 03:05 PM

the electronics works i just tested it fired up normally.... my main question was

how bad is it for the pack? cause i can't see it it's a hardcase.

Sounds like you lucked out. Your pack is fine. Usually when you hook up a battery backwards to an ESC, it fries the ESC. I toasted a $150 Viper like that. I was using bullet connectors and borrowed a battery from a friend for a race. I didn't verify his pack was laid out like mine before plugging in. Arc and done.

I've touched a + and a - before. The pack did work fine for a while. Then a cell went dead about a month later. Lipos suck. Too fragile in my opinion

hayabusafmw 04-09-2014 05:15 PM

I forgot to mention they barely touched and arc happened

Never managed to connect the thing maybe thats why
Also my on off switch is always on maybe that helped too

Your battery is probably fine. Your speedo on the other hand....

hayabusafmw 04-09-2014 07:36 PM

Esc works fine....

like i said i didn't connect the thing i just tapped it and a big huge spark flew and caught my attention as...HOLY MOLY something is upside down

That's a hell of a lot different than plugging it into an ESC backwards. Dead shorting a battery puts a huge load on it and can stress the cells. I'm not surprised it died. LiPos are hardly fragile.

Tapped it or plugged in makes no difference. Reverse polarity is reverse polarity. Sometimes you get lucky. I've had my oops moments and plugged stuff in backwards and had the esc be okay. The second the plug touches and connects that circuit with reverse polarity though the esc has a good chance of going up in smoke. I've also seen the esc act fine for a while but quickly starts acting up and then dies. Hopefully yours doesn't have any problems down the road.

Don't worry about the battery though.

hayabusafmw 04-09-2014 09:53 PM

for a light tap of reverse polarity i might have screwed up the esc???? yikes... ok even tough it seems fine i will learn from it but seriously i don't see how why it would be dead

from that.... hell that mean just a 3s on that system would have make it melt

lbenton 04-10-2014 07:39 AM

The battery is more likely survive that than the ESC. If the ESC is fine and the battery did not have an obvious meltdown then you should be OK.

If you have any worry at all put it on the charger. They in many cases have built in protection to shield themselves against things like revers polarity or bad cells in the lipo. They will tell you if there is serious issue, and a balance charge can give you a hint as to more subtle issues. If it takes forever to balance then the cells are likely done for, but that is an age issue in most cases.

If a cell goes below voltage from the other's in the a pack just charge that cell alone with the balancer cables with some diy! It's very easy!

Charge her with slow charge.
If she does not take any charge cause it's to low... put in nihm mode and after she's on 3v or more stop and put lipo mode again!

Or make it even more simple...
-Discharge the whole package to the voltage that cell have, and stop imidatly when all cells are equal!
Then in the next 3 days maximum balance charge the whole pack!

And all give kick again and again.

When storage the lipos for more then 3 days always charge in storage mode... if you charge normal or balance charge for storage the lipos will die very premature!

For what people say a below 2.5v lipo is dead is right but if leaved for 3 days mininum in that voltage (no problema)... if in those days you apply the right voltage either to play or storage they will live like new packs! I had some with 0,2-0,1v, yes i leaved an device on for 1 full day, and did the nimh mode and then lipo mode... and i still use that lipo, it was years ago!

In my experience it worked! Others may vary!

Actually the one cell is deflated. It's about 1/2 the thickness as the others. I won't be surprised if he posts about his battery gong bad in about a month or so. Lipos aren't fragile? Lol they're literally the most fragile, high maintenance battery I've ever seen. You can short many other types and they arefine. I also never had to storage charge any type of battery to keep it from swelling in my life.
