Gearing Question

Ok, so I have seen this in print both ways, and I am trying to figure out which is correct. I run a 2wd buggy in 17.5 class, but it applies to all.

Which is correct, hot motor=under geared final drive
hot ESC=over geared final drive

Or is it opposite? Meaning hot motor=over geared final drive and hot esc means under geared final drive.

I am right at 160* for temps on the motor, but I would like to know which way is correct so I know how to tune.

Thanks

Chris

In general:

Hot motor: Too high of gearing (too large of a pinion), which is too low of a final drive (reduction) ratio.

The confusion is frequently caused by higher gearing (large pinion) being the same as too low of a FDR (final drive ratio, but it is a reduction ratio, so works backwards numerically).

Hope that makes sense.

P.S. It is also possible to have too hot of a motor when undergeared, but that is more likely with a lower wind modified, less so with a 17.5. And yes the ESC will tend to be hot as well.

That makes perfect sense

Also try to aim for top speed about 3/4 down the straight. That will help get you close to where you need to be geared at.
