Radio?
 

Been out of it for a while. Now that I got my son a Slash I think I may do a little racing again. Doubtful I will be racing big events mostly just club racing. Now onto my ? I have an older Jr radio I think its the x3. It is still a crystal radio. Am I better off just biting the bullet and getting a new 2.4ghz? I was thinking of the m4/4pl/or 3pm-x. Is the 3pm-x as fast as the 4pk?

Get a flysky, they make a great radio at a decent price....i use a gt3b and its kewl i love!!

The radio I have is a JR xr3i from what I have gathered online. I dont have it in front of me to know the exact model#. I did notice that I could turn it into a 2.4 fairly easily from what I have seen.

Personally I'd stay away from the flysky, not that there is anything terribly wrong with them but everyone I know that has had one (myself included gt3c) after switch to a higher end brand would never go back. The feel and responsiveness of the better radios far surpass the flysky, the latency time for the flysky stuff is quite high compared.

On to the Futaba, I'd personally suggest the 4pls, to me it is very comfortable, user friendly with more settings then you'll probably ever need and the quality is top notch. BigSquid rc did a bash test on it and slammed an rc truck into launching it off a roof to the found, 2 times and it nothing happened to it so its quite durable.

Is the 3pm-x as fast as the 4pk, as far as I understand yes. Are you going to be able to tell the difference between the fasst and fhss systems as a club level driver? Highly doubtful.
I race expert buggy both club level and some big races so I consider myself a fairly competent driver and I have both the 4pkr and the 4pls and have a tough time discerning the difference in responsiveness between the two.

I'd make a list of the transmitters you are interested in and head to the track on race day and talk to the people using said remotes, just let them know your thinking about buying one and ask to see how it feels in your hands. That will be the overall deciding factor, comfort in your hand.

Using a module to convert will add latency, at least it did with the old spectrum modules but I'd have a feeling the Jr would be the same. I'd say stick with a dedicated 2.4ghz system

Futaba 4PL...can't beat it!

You can still use the JR XR3i for racing for now if your just are getting back into racing. Since everyone is using 2.4 radios, they're shouldn't be a problem with finding frequency with FM. Heck I've even seen some old Futaba magnums being used in modern day races.

This way you can get laps in til you find a good 2.4 radio.

i have the fly sky gt3b. it does its job very well. One thing i did do was replace the 8 AA batteries with a lipo because it uses up batteries quickly
