100c ROAR approved battery help

Hey guys, im getting into VTA class and am looking at buying a ROAR approved 2s 100C battery. I know there are a lot of different brands out there but I was wondering which one is the best for their buck?

johnbb9299 10-16-2013 09:02 AM

150c?

I also see a 150c rating battery from maxamps.. anybody know if its good?

Wildcat1971 10-16-2013 09:20 AM

Those C rating are fake. Some battery matchers have cycled those packs at 35amp and compared the IR and avg voltage to other 65-80c packs, and the those imaginary 100+ c rating packs were not better. There is no standard for calculating the "C". Without a standard you cant really compare across brands. You probably wont believe any of this and then go buy those 100+ c packs, but you cant say you were not told...

Buy SMC batteries. Better then the hobbywing stuff and Gensace.

I like SMC, but I honestly cant bash GensAce. I have only ever owned 1 GensAce pack. It is over a year old and has lower IR than my new packs SMC, Promatch, etc. And, it still accepts the full 5000mah on charge and discharge. And it has well over 100 cycles on it. But I prefer SMC because of the online support from Danny.

Interesting, so you guys are telling me that a 70c rating battery from SMC is just as good as any other 90, 100, or 150c rating? If so that's great news cause that will save me a lot of money.

C rating has no standard or meaning. Danny from SMC does test each batch and has in the past changed manufacturers because they didnt uphold his level of quality. I have run the promatch packs and they are very good. I have also had very good results from Promatch. Ask yourself this. If trinity, orion and maxamps can make 100c packs, then why cant Reedy? Do you think reedy is some small company? Do you think maxamps is designed and making lipo packs from scratch? No, all lipo packs are made in china from a few factories. If Trinity had access to a 100c pack, so would reedy. Orions motors and esc's are made by hobbywing. Orions didnt design anything, the gave a little input and HW made the esc's and motors. Same goes for packs. The main input US companies have with the china factories is the quality controls. Orion, reedy and trinity slap their names on the packs, thus I am sure they have contracts with those companies to deliver production with in a certain range specifications. Same that Danny from SMC does. But he does it WAY cheaper than the "big" companies.

I would take a hard look at the Gens Aces if you are just starting out. VTA doesn't put alot of strain on a battery (especially compared to something like 4WD SCT or Mod Sedan).

I have run quite a few different batteries (RevTech 65/6500, Orion 90c/6500) and not much difference in VTA compared to my Gen Ace 50/65c batteries. Remember you have a limit of 5000mah on the capacity side for VTA as well.

Totally forgot about it having to be 5000mah... Are you allowed to run shorty packs in VTA?

All my batteries have come from ProMatch. Customer service is great and are the prices. There is no need to spend a ton of money on batteries unless you plan on racing in the big events where every little thing counts.

I have been racing Mini-z for 9 years now so I am a competitive driver. Any bit of speed I can get I'll take :)

Shorty packs are allowed but not of much use as usually you have to add weight as it is to get to the 1550g min.

I have a pair of promatch shortys that feel pretty punchy but are a big pain to balance every time. Honestly I have been the happiest with my Gen Aces for VTA. 4 packs all over a year old and are raced week in and out in VTA and they still feel great (and all 4 cost less than 1 battery from another company...).

I prefer SPC Racing. Long before other companies started to do so, SPC was testing every pack prior to shipping and they still do so. I think they were testing every pack they sold even way back in the matched Nimh days. But regardless for the OP, stay away from the silly priced 90C, 100C and 150C stuff.

Just out of curiousity... are you sponsored or have some connection to SPC? Looking back at your previous posts I see alot of the same rhetoric on these SPC packs but very little activity on any other topic...?
