How do you guys dispose off your old lipo battery's? And dis charge them fully.. Many thanks.

Shot an old one with a 22 the other day. Was trying to get it to catch fire and it didn't work. It did swell up to about 3x the size though. :D

Home Depot will usually recycle them. As well, your local dump probably has an electronics collection day or the like scheduled every so often that you can take them to.

Never thought off the local dump! Might try there...

Contact your local fire department and they will give you instructions on disposing hazardous waste, and where to go in your area.

I take mine to Batteries Plus. Any major battery retailer will take care of it. Don't even have to mess with discharging it.

There is nothing hazardous about a fully discharged lipo. Can be thrown in the normal trash without any fear of the EPA knocking on your door.

To fully discharge a 4s or less lipo connect it to a 12v auto bulb and let it sit over night OUTSIDE. Come back the next day, twist the positive and negative leads together and throw in the trash.

My LHS takes them in, might want to check there first.

Might be "safe" to toss them, but do you want to drink lithium in your water.

Lithium can be some nasty stuff. Please don't carry on with just throwing it away. Any electronic store has to take electronic waste products that were sold to consumers so best buy and so on have a drop box for them. Also your LHS will take the cells in as well.

Working in the Hazmat industry, I will tell you that it is not ok to discharge and toss them in the trash or the dump. Lithium batteries have no recycled value for reuse and are very volatile. Any lithium disposed of properly ends up in a special area of a hazmat landfill segregated from other materials and specially designed to contain. The idea of neutralization helps but is sometimes inefficient. There is no "treatment" and thermal destruction is impossible due to explosions. Throwing your lipo's into the local dump will result in future contamination of the surrounding soil and leaching to the water table. I know, 1 battery, no big deal. How many do the average hobbiest go through in a year. About 8 for me and my son. Localized to your area with at least 100 racers/fliers and now you have 800+ batteries in 1 dump all ready to create disaster. Dispose of your lipo's properly using an e-waste facility like mentioned before or the local city/county household waste disposal facility.

Well, I hope best buy has more intelligent people working there than Radio Shack...called there asked if they had a safe way of disposing lipo batteries..the shmuck on the phone asked" what is a lipo battery"..really:weird:
