LiPo Storage Mode
What is the best and/or most effective way to store a lipo battery? How long can/should lipos remain fully charged. I try to run my Blitz every day but I work and have a family and things get in the way. I have a Venom Pro Charger and the discharge rate is only 1 amp so storage takes a ridiculously long time to complete. Any ideas, short of replacing my charger?

A lipo should never be fully charged for more than an hour or two. Just run the battery in your vehicle for five minutes. Storage charge is for batteries not planning to be used for a couple months or longer(roughly 3.85v per cell). I generally discharge to 3.6v per cell until my next use which is usually a week or two later.

Either will work fine. It doesn't matter if it's done by charging or discharging. Just get the cell voltage somewhere in the 3.75 to 3.85 volt range or so. Easiest way is just running your last pack for half as long, as storage is roughly 50% of capacity. A typical race heat usually works well too.

So is the storage mode necessary or should I just run down the battery a bit?
I've also heard a lot of folks either leave lipos fully charged or charge them all the night before. I think there's a lot of flexibility around lipo care but I just don't see the benefit of not storaging it. I also have a charger that performs this fairly quick though. I had an x4 that I dumped because of long storage times. I use the TrakPower VR-1 now. Up to 10A discharge! Without replacing the charger, run the pack for a bit then storage it. |
How far down should the battery be run to make the storage the most expeditious? I have a Tekin RS and I can configure the LVC to a certain voltage.

3.8V per cell is what I see the most. That'd be a good way to do it. Just monitor your motor temp every so often.
