Crawler ESC Whats the difference?
 

Im working on an Axial SCX10 and im trying to figure out what motor im going to run. I see ESC's listed as "crawler" is there really a difference between them and any other ESC on the market?

Crawlers need an esc with adjustable drag brakes. But I believe most esc's offer that now so no, you don't need a "crawler specific" esc. I run this one in my wraith and it's great and very inexpensive. http://www.brushlesshobbies.com/LT4-...mer_p_113.html

They also have instant reverse.

Im going to run a brushed motor in mine. I have read so many threads about people using different motors for different reasons. Everything from 12 turn motors for wheel speed to 60 turn motors for super crawling. Im probably going to start with a simple stock silver can motor and work from there.

Ok yeah if you're gonna run brushed, forget the esc I recommended...it only does BL motors.

Kicking around the idea of using this motor. Any of you guys us it? Like it?

No, but for $14 try it. If it sucks, you're only out $14. So far in the two months that I have my wraith, iv'e spent almost $250 on motors trying to get just the right one for what I want this thing to do. I have another one that should be here by the end of the week so we'll see how that goes.

PM me a list of motors you have and your prices. Id rather buy a few from a fellow forum mumber than someone on Ebay.

I've built 3 scx10's, a wraith, and every comp crawler out there. The very best esc/motor combo for the money for bashing or comping scale is the holmes hobby BRXL waterproof esc/motor combo.

The esc can handle up to 6S lipo, great drag brake, waterproof ($10 extra which is worth it), and easy to program/calibrate. The motors are second to none for crawling, bashing, or anything in between. On top of everything else, they have the best service you can ask for.

The combo is pricy if that is a concern, but for the money you cannot go wrong.

handicrawler On your wraith, what turn/Kv motor did you use and how much does your wraith weigh? I'm really getting tired of trying to find just the right combo. Right now my wraith weighs 7.85lbs, 5.5" tall tires, 32p 60/10 and 43/13's in the pumpkins. Ideally, I want it to be able to crawl like a champ yet still be able to hit 25-30mph. Or maybe what I want is impossible?

I ran a 21t holmes motor with the brxl esc on a 2S Turnigy 2700 mah 65-130C nano-tech battery. Crawled like a champ and had enough wheel speed to keep me happy. I'm not sure if it went 25-30, but it was fast enough for me. I think mine weighed in at 7.5-8 lbs.

I'm considering getting a new ESC for my Tamiya land cruiser but I'm not sure which one to get. I definitely want to stick with a brushed motor! Probably a 35T Holmes hobbies torquemaster sport. To take advantage of the drag brake don't you need to have a brushless motor? Right now I'm running a very old duratrax intellispeed. I wouldn't mind buying a castle creations sidewinder SCT combo with the 3800 KV four pole motor because I could use the motor in my 2WD slash. As far as I know the sidewinder SCT ESC is capable of running a brushed motor. Has anyone ever ran this ESC in their crawler? If so, how did it work? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I have run the sidewinder esc's in many different applications. Never disappointed with them. Drag brake on a brushed motor is incredible by the way. On brushless it slows them down and on brushed it stops them.
