Advice needed for a 1/10th ESC.....
 

Hey guys....I'm putting together a 1/10 SC truck and have decided to plop down the extra money to get a Reedy motor. This one actually >>> http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...-550-Motor-45T

And I could use some advice on an ESC. Since it's a 550 motor , should I just go ahead and get something like a Tekin RX8 or something similar? I think it's a little big and will run a little warm for a smaller RS series....but can't be sure on that.

Could you give me some choices on what may work good with a big ol' 550 4.5T motor?

Why would you spend that type of money on a 2 pole 550 motor when you can get a HW SCT-Pro ESC, 4 pole SC motor and programming card for $160 - $190 total?

There is no point in buying US branded ESC's and motors for SC nowadays when there are half priced alternatives that are just as good or better.

Go with the RX8 you will never look back... Ppl love those reedy motors tho

Thanks for your input. On your suggestions above , I agree the Tenshock motor is definitely one I want to try. I am not going to waste my money on one of those cheap ESC's though. I've done a fair amount of reading just on this site alone of people having issues with them and I'd rather avoid it. At the track where I race , and out of 90+ entrants tonight......not one , I mean not ONE driver runs that ESC. That ESC may be fine for bashing , but I haven't seen one serious racer use one yet at any length of time. In fact....I haven't seen a racer around even use one ever.

But on the motor.....I think that Tenshock motor is a different story. I know it's extremely popular on here , but I haven't seen one run yet. Definitely going to try one.

I'm going off of what "I've seen" personally , in action , on a track. That Reedy I mentioned was my choice because "to me"....it looked like the smoothest and most powerful SCT power plant I have seen yet. There were two of them at the track tonight......and it was something you had to see with your own eyes to believe. I was also impressed by some of the Tekin's and Orion setups as well.

Please don't take any of that personal. I just would rather stick with a well known brand name that has been proven on a track.

Respectfully, I think you should do some more reading on the HW SCT-Pro ESC. It has a very good reputation here on rctech. Nothing backyard basher about it. Same for the Tenshock and HW SC motors.

I've been running the HW/Tenshock combo all summer in the heat of Texas without issue. One of the better purchases I have made. Also, the HW LCD programming box owns the overpriced Tekin programming unit.

That SCT-Pro is great in 1/10 SCT applications. You are correct that the RS is a little weak for SCT. If you buy Tekin, go with the RX8.

The SCT pro is a top of the line ESC IMO. I have been running Hobbywing stuff for 3 years and have been very happy with them. I have seen more Tekin rx8's go up in smoke than all the hobbywings put together. For 90 bucks Tekin will usually replace them but the SCT pro sells for 87.50 . I run 8th scale buggy and I ran the 80 amp until the SCT pro came out and it's a good bit smaller . Hobbywing makes alot of the other speedos such as Speedpassion , Orion and others.

Jeffro, I think you are confusing Hobbywing with other "Hobby----" crap chinese brands. Hobbywing is a top level ESC in any class, lots ot drivers use it anywhere and I can guarantee you it's a good company, although I admit I will use a Nosram ESC next year. I never had any problems with their Xerun v2.1. You say you never saw them used, what about world class drivers like Andy Moore, Yannic Prumper and Shin Adachi who use them on 1:10 TC World championships? Their V3 is regarded as the best ESC at the moment in onroad, their ESCs have by far the best boost adjustability and parameters (which is bad if you don't like programming your electronics- some time will need to be put to setup the ESC perfectly), their LCD programming box is the best there is plus it has a very good help thread on this site. I can only say feel free to go with Hobbywing, as one serious racer to another. P.S. 1:10 IFMAR World Champion Jilles Grosskamp was powered by a Orion ESC on his way to victory, which is a rebranded Hobbywing if I am not mistaken ;)

I'e found the pc adjustability of my hobbywing 150 amp esc to be pretty poor. Not a whole lot of adjustments to make and it is a joke compared to the adjustability of castle software. I'd go with the rx-8 or a castle mamba max pro just for the adjustability alone. If you get the castle you will most likely need to run an external bec, after that, it's an awesome esc. I'm pretty sure the v3 hobbywing esc's have more adjustability, i just can't speak for the sct-pro.

I don't have any experience with this ESC, I was just saying that Hobbywing is a good brand ;)
