For the OP...I was reading an article not long ago showing the A mains from some top European and North American events. Most of them were using Sanwa/Airtronics radios. For what ever that is worth.
I think both radios probably have their quirks and benefits. I have used KO Propo, Spektrum ,and Airtronics since my Futaba issue...I love KO Propo (hate their new radio) but have switched to Airtronics. Very impressed so far.

The 4PKS-R looks and feels better to me. My brother n law has the M12 and loves it. Guess its a matter of opinion..

M12 it's the fastest period. I LOVE IT! The ergonomics are just right.

I held both when I made the decision, and it was the M12 hands down that felt like a precision piece of equipment, vs the 4pks-R which felt a little sloppy and cheap. I bought 2 venom 2s 2400mah TX/RX lipos with it which fit perfectly inside the battery compartment (albeit with a small strip of foam for 0 movement), at the same time. Got the m12 for $539 at a black Friday sale, and each battery for $29. Still waiting for airtronics to release an aluminum case though.
I will say, the M12 is impressive and noticeably faster than the KO Propo Helios I was replacing, so much so it took 3 or 4 practice runs to get used to the increased response, as I was turning in too soon for a while till I retrained myself and my turn in points.
To me the drop down is perfect for wheel placement, as my helios also had the drop down. Love the fact that I can adjust wheel throw and spring tension, and it comes with all the adj. accessories.
And Id like to add, I did loose .5-.8 sec per lap on avg. with the new tx. (could be mental I suppose) but I went from mid pack a-main stk buggy to winning regularly immediately after I made the switch.
I Really like how you can change models on the M12 by holding the select button left or right while powering up the radio to switch between stock and mod cars. Also I have my throttle expo set to the dial and my throttle EPA set to the open TR4 switch so I can adjust feel and power during a race in mod.
One thing to note: If you get the M12, you must set each channel to SHR or SSR mode to get the speed. And if you make a mode change, you MUST rebind the RX after each change so the receiver knows what mode to use, otherwise it resorts to the previous setting, or NOR (normal) which is slower for analog servos.
Overall, I think a good choice and a wise investment if your serious about racing.
