Honestly, nothing that Spektrum makes. I tried out the Spektrum stuff when I first got into the hobby and the quality was sub par. I personally would recommend either the Airtronics M11X or the Futaba 4PKS. Both are great quality radios and very fast in response times. Gives you a very direct, connected feel and the quality is outstanding.

and for half price almost you can by the Sanwa/airtronics MT4.
or the MT12 if you want the best..

I have the MT-4 myself and it is a great radio. Does everything I need it to do and then some.

Sanwa/Airtronics or KO. Don't waste your time on anything else.

Had the DX3R and it was "ok". The reception kept cutting out at the back parts of our track. I wasn't too concerned about finding out why, but others were experiencing the same issue.
Switched to the 4PK and reception was great. There was a noticeable difference in response time too (faster than the DX3R). However, I hated the jog dial. It was not precise and moved around too much. I think that problem was fixed w/ the 4PKS.
Have the new RadioPost and it seems real nice. I haven't had a chance to run yet though.
As with everything else in this hobby, there are a ton of good choices. It seems that I have to try 3 or 4 things before I settle on what I really like. FWIW, I've heard the KO's are spectacular and would have gotten one had it not been for the RadioPost deal.

KO is just as good, not as freindly to program.

One thing that is important, at least to me, is how the radio feels in your hands. Futaba, Airtronics, KO and others, they all make great radio gear, but they also feel different. For example, the Futaba 4PL is great budget radio, but it's too light and small for me. The 4PKS on the other end feels great, and that's why I run that radio! I used to run the Airtronics M11 with Spektrum module and I used to have some interference and reception issues. After switching to the 4PKS I have not had any radio related problems!

+1 for m11x
budget version is the mx3x. Also an awesome radio.
If you want 100% of the features you need - mx3x.
If you want 250% of features that are just cool to have - m11x.
mt4 seems cool if you want telemetry. just more stuff to break imo. Not saying i wouldn't try one though!
edit: another +1 for ehartman. comfort is key also. if you dont like the way it feels, throw your driving out the window!

The newer Spektrum Dx3r is alot better, but not as reliable as the Airtronics and KO stuff.
Someone please tell me that the 4PKS has finally got the overheating problem fixed! The 4PKS radios in my area seem to work really well.

I have been running the 4PKS for 2 years now in hot and cold weather (it was about 100 degrees in St Louis for the Futaba Nitro Challenge last week) and I have not had any overheating problems.... If I am not mistaking, there was an issue with the receiver overheating early on, but I have not heard of anyone having this issue in a long time...
