I really like these motors but they are not perfect. Had a 17.5 with a bad phase out of the box last week.

Dremeling the timing plate will get you more timing for onroad. These motors have little timing built in, but very torquey and friendly to novice. Also heard a Reedy timing board pops in and gives a static timing boost so you can avoid getting the dremel out.

For F1 4.0 is right for 21.5 boosted starting point. At 6:1 the motor will top out almost immediately on the straight. With the torque there will be a lot of wheel spin in the twisty bits.

Without boost, on rubber tires we were running the same motors @ 2.75 to 3.25 FDR and they're coming off under 130 without fans. The only thing I can think of is that the light weight of the car decreases the amount of torque required from the motor to make it go.

I have another on order for my CRC WTF-1.

I run the 21.5 in my USGT car (no boost) on a 90x40 carpet track. I gear between 3.4 and 3.6 FDR. Its never been over 130 with a fan. Good motor.

I've been running this in my usgt and had the fan fall off but the motor only came off at 150F after 8 min. 3.5fdr. Usually with a fan it's been coming off at 120-130F.

I've been using the 21.5 in my F1 for almost two years now and it's been great.

sometimes they are pretty tight. i had to use a set of pliers and a piece of cardstock to protect the finish to get it to turn.

Timing at zero is 19-20 degrees. Max timing was at 30-31 degrees on my tester.

No wonder people say it is fine to just crank the timing on these motors.

I have a Trackstar 17.5 in my buggy and a 13.5 in my tourer, pleased with their performance but I find they both run hot. Finish a 6m buggy run on a warm day and the temp is around 75c with stock timing. If I switch it to my Speed Passion 17.5 and do the next race the temp is around 55-60c (stock timing as well). 2wd rear mount buggy so there is no way to mount a heatsink or a fan..

Hobbyking has now released another 540 size brushless car motor called the "Hobbyking X-Car"

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...r_1489Kv_.html

The kv ratings are lower than the Trackstar counterparts, and a little bit more expensive, wonder if they'll submit them for ROAR approval as well.

Cheers

You might need to go a tooth smaller on the pinion with the trackstar motor.
