Starter box Lipo gets hot quick!

I have a Losi 2200mah 14.8v starter box lipo. The battery voltage reading when checking with my voltage checker its 15.1v, the lipo gets hot when running the starter box for a very short amount of time. This is at 15.1v, checking after it gets hot.

Starter box is an Ofna blue truggy starter.

Is this normal?

Is the pack fully charged ?

Yes, as stated, voltage was 15.1v, the lipo is a 4s 14.8v.

What is the C rating on the battery. A starter box pulls a ton of amps, and you need a battery, with a high rating, that can handle it.

If it's a 4s, full charge voltage should be closer to 16.8v.

20c I believe, it is the Losi starter box battery, made for starter boxes.

Yes it was at 16.7v at first, but after a few starts on the box, it was down to 15.1v, this is checking it right after I felt how how it was.

Being that the actual battery is 14.8v, I figured 15.1v would be characterized as fully charged, still I don't see why it should be heating up during use at that voltage.

If it drains so quickly and gets hot it is possibly dying. Can your charger measure internal resistance? Also does the motor in the starter get really hot as well?

Yes, the motors do get hot quickly and I noticed that it drained quite quick as well. Also, feeling the battery now, it was a little bit puffed, just a little, when it was hot, not anymore though.

No, my charger can't measure internal resistance.

If your Pack is Dumping down to 15.1 after only a few starts and not recouping itself withing a few seconds, I would venture to say either the battery is shot or there's some Serious resistance going on in the box.

Ill assume you still have the Stock Tamiya Connector's in the box ? If so Cut those out in favor of Hard wiring. Those Tamiya connector's are like the Hoover dam for resistance.

Can't believe I forgot another thing, I think it drained quick because it was rubbing against the chassis at times, this is while I was trying to adjust the starter box, so not just a few starts and I assume this is why its been getting hot and draining quick?

And no, I'm using deans connectors. How would I charge it if its hard wired?

It shouldn't be dropping down to 15.1v only after "a few starts" from ~16.8v.

I beleive you have a defective motor in the starter box. Your drawing so much current thru the motor you are exceeding the discharge c rating of the battery. You said the battery voltage drops only after a couple cycles of the starterbox. Is this with no load? and not rubbing on the chassis. With no load on the motor you should not draw enough current to cause your battery voltage to drop that fast and heat up that quick.

Like I said, it was rubbing on the chassis, so thats why, it was under a lot of load.

The motors were working fine with NIMH batteries, but since then the setup of my car on the box has been messed up, fixed now though.

I'm glad you got it fixed.:nod::nod:
