ESC/Motor Combo Help

Hey Guys,

Ive been out of the sport before LiPos, Brushless Motors came in so i'm shooting for some advice.

Just invested in a AE B44.1 FT and am in need of some advice on a solid combo of ESC/Motor/Batteries to run in a Stock class. I'm aware that the turns are capped at 17.5, I've been looking at Novak and LRP ESCs so something along those lines would be nice.

Thanks alot for your future advice :D

Maek sure you choose a sensored motor. They have a smoother powerband than sensorless. You could take a look at the Hobbywing V3 Xerun esc coming out soon. I have Xerun 60a V2.1 (software version V3.0) with a LRP/Tamiya Transpeed motor in my Tamiya Avante and it is buttersmooth and fast!

Anything hobbywing can be a good choice. You can pick up a 60amp esc and hobbywing 17.5 motor for roughly 140 bucks.

The V3 Xerun is out now, but the price is a lot higher compared to other hobbywing products. Falconsekido.com has a sale going this weekend, the V3 is $187.75, and you get a free LCD program box with it.

A lot of guys seem to be having good luck with these esc's:

They are very very similar to the hobbywing 120A V2 esc, but for about half the price.

Do a search, there is a thread on here about these speed controllers.

2wd? 4wd?

I want to upgrade to brushless in a 1/10 4wd buggy and I figure a combo would be the way to go. Motors and esc's matched for certain applications sounds good. In product desciptions I see them saying its good for 2wd buggys truggys etc. One I keep running across specifies 1/10 scale under 5 lbs. I might race after a lot of practice, mostly I'm wearing ruts over the bumps and jumps I've found in the yard. Any recommendations? budgets about 150-200 not including lipos. Would it hurt a brushless system to run on NiMH? lipos are coming but maybe not right away.

Is it absolutely positively necessary to run lipos, no. Will you be able to get good performance out the brushless system with nimh, that depends on what kind of power the system demands, and what type of vehicle its in. I ran a Novak GTB brushless system with their velociti 5.5 motor for several years using nimh batteries, and was happy with the performance. However, that was in an Associated T4 stadium truck. A 4wd buggy is going to be heavier and have more drivetrain resistance, with the addition of two more wheels to get the power to. Most brushless systems designed for 4x4 applications are going to be a lot more power hungry, to the point that nimh packs just can't provide enough, fast enough. I would switch to lipos as soon as your budget allows it, you will NOT regret it. Also, the price of running a lipo setup has really come down in the past couple of years. You can get a decent pack for $30-50, which is less than I spent on the last nimh pack i bought before making the switch.

Any suggestions on a system for a 4wd buggy around 150-200 bucks? It's a Himoto Zmoto, 540 motor in it now.

Yeah, I knew it wouldnt have punch without lipos, its cool it wont hurt it. I'll likely have the dough for system and lipos within the month. Patience is not one of my virtues, I run every day or two.
