Default Pre-tinning a 12 AWG wire

Hi there,
I have a question for you.

I would like to change the wiring of my ESC (LRP sxx ver 2) with 3 black wires (I don't like the red/yellow/blue at all).

I have the LRP soldering station and a (crappy) roll of solder...

My problem is that I cannot tin the wire (12 AWG) because the solder is not able to flow though the strands of the wire.
The only result is a "cold joint" ball of solder on the external surface, leaving the internal strands untouched.

It doesn't matter the temperature of the solder, the point is I am not able to heat the core of cable enough to transfer the heat on the other side (I put the solder iron tip on a side and the solder on the other one....). Can it be a bad quality of solder??

FYI, the cables are these ... so they are in pure copper and without flux.

any help?
thank you

Use flux. It helps the solder flow through the strands. You can pick it up wherever you get solder for probably $3-5. Don't get plumbing flux or solder. Get the stuff for electronics.

Are you pre-tinning the tip of the iron before putting it on the wire? Also, pick up some 60/40 solder from Rat Shack. It has the rosin flux already in it. Should be easy.

Rosin core solder is not the same as using flux. Especially on bigger wire, flux will make it a cleaner and more secure solder job. It takes 2 seconds to put a bit of flux on the end of the wire.

Personal preference is 63/37 solder and liquid RMA flux.

Also, spend the $5 on a good roll of electronics grade solder, makes a big difference as well.

Just with a new roll of good solder it came out an outstanding job!
I would have never thought the solder could have such a big difference in carrying out the job...

thanks all for the help!
