Comparing Motors

I have a Associated B4.1 buggy kit I am building. My RTR buggy comes with a Reedy 3800kv motor. I would like this buggy I'm building to have a bit more power than the RTR. How does a 17.5 motor compare to the 3800kv?
What does the 17.5 mean? I was told that a 13.5 motor is pretty equivalent to the 3800kv motor.
Is there a more simple way of know the power of these motors since they use different terms in describing their power and size?

No simple answer, Kv ratings don't compare to turns. I can tell you that a 17.5 will be much slower than a 3800kv, 17.5 is about 2200kv +/-. Novaks website has a list of their motors with Kv ratings that will give you an idea of what to look for...I'll look it up for you and link it here..;)

Kv ratings are not all the same with every manufacturer but it gives you an idea

Motors

I guess to add to my original post I still have some questions.
What I am really looking for is this:
I run at a large outdoor clay track which has all sorts of jumps, turns and one long straight.
I am building a AE B4.1 kit and want a motor ESC combo which is faster but not killer faster than my current B4.1 RTR which has a Reedy brushless 3800kv motor.
I do not want to break the bank but am OK at spending $200-225 for the combo but I can't see spending the big bucks because this is a hobby and not life or death. I also want a motor that won't overheat or one that will drain a 5000 lipo in a few minutes.
I am considering a Castle or Reedy combo.....
A lot here to consider, any ideas?

Rick

Buy a used race-grade ESC like an LRP from the for-sale ads here - they can be found for @$130 for even the newer v.2 ones often and pair that with a brand new $85 mod motor of your choice and you'll have a sensored setup that will be way better than what you can get in a combo pack for the same price range. An 8.5 is usually about the maximum amount of power a buggy can put down and it's always easier to dial an 8.5 back electronically than it is to make a 13.5 go faster if you need to adjust the controlability of your car.

Simple question, what's the gearing on the 3800kv now? Have you fiddled with different gearing to suit the conditions? I ask because the 3300kv in my SC10RS is plenty potent for most tracks, when geared right.

Certainly better motors are out there, but you might be able to make this one work for ~the cost of a pinion or two.

...Unless you've already explored that of course.

Finally spit the bucks for a new motor/esc combo.
Bought a Mamba Max Pro with NC1406 6900kv motor for my B4.1 2wd buggy.
Did I overdo it? I can tame this beast down with the ESC program from Castle.
How much more juice is the motor going to suck over the stock 3800kv?

Not sure why you went so high in the kv rating

The 4600 / 5700 would have been more than adequate

6900 will need to be geared fairly conservatively or it will get hot

Cheers

6900Kv.....way too much for a 2wd buggy. I might not even put it in a 4wd buggy...OVERKILL...imo

MarkA 10-28-2011 08:19 AM

+1 to the above plus Castles stuff is not known for its smoothness which will be aggravated in a buggy. Dial that thing way down!

proraptor 10-28-2011 09:14 AM

That 6900 is going to be useless in that car....you need a 13.5 or 8.5

RickSlick 10-28-2011 08:42 PM

Sent back the 6900kv motor and getting the 4600kv.

racer1812 10-28-2011 10:29 PM

A sensored system would have been your best bet for a 2wd buggy BUT going with the 4600 is a good move. It will be plenty, IMO.
