Smoothest 6.5T motor?
 

Hi guys,

I'm currently running a 5.5T motor in my dex410 because I got it when I bought the car from a friend with only 1 run on it. The LRP 5.5T octa doesn't have a very smooth powerband in my opinion. The bottom end is extremely aggressive. I turned my expo down to 45% to get a smoother bottom end.

I'm not sure if I should go with a 7.5T or 6.5T motor. I race about half the time on a pretty big astro track and the other half on a smaller technical hardpacked, dusty track. I don't care about motors with a lot of juice, but I'd like to have a smooth powerband.

Brands I'm thinking of are Tekin, LRP/Nosram, Viper, Speedpassion.

Are you sure it's the motor? All my LRPs are painfully smooth... everything from my 4.5 all the way up to my 17.5.

I'm pretty sure. The power profile is number 3 on the ESC which is one of the least aggressive profiles. (8 is the most aggressive profile)
I'll try profile 1 and 2 too when I'm at the track, but I'm looking for an other motor since 5.5T is too much for a 4wd imo.

I'd like to buy the smoothest 6.5T motor available.

I've tried the ones you mentioned and a few others. I preffer the Murfdogg Synergy 6.5T, www.murfdogg.com and also found on the RCTech thread. Try to find an Orca RX2, smoother motor I've ever tried. Was able to use a 6.5 on my 2wd without issues. Those motors got smooth bottom and a stronger mid range, love it.

I just got a Nosram 6.5t motor and i like it very much, runs cool with a lot of power, speed and smooth, i run it low geared and took some epa off the throttle and its perfect!

For me I've recently tried the Team Orion Vortex VST motors - 6.5 and totally loved the smoothness of it.

Is it possible to buy a smaller diameter rotor than what is in there? I have heard that going to an optional smaller diameter rotor smooths out the power. Don't know if it is true or not. Some companies offer optional rotors.

Alot of it has to due with the KV rating of the motor. Higher KV motor is less smooth and has massive torque, while a lower KV motor has smoother accelaration and powerband. In every other RC application except RC cars motors are rated by KV ratings not by number of turns on rotor

I run speedpassion 8.5T and it feels very smooth? 5.5T is a screamer of a motor and that could be your problem.

This is correct. The smaller the rotor, the more air gap it will have between the rotor and stator. The bigger the air gap, the less torque the motor will have. Also, smaller rotor means less magnet. Less magnet equals less torque.

KV rating in RC Car sensored systems is irrelevant and is a means of falsely marketing the power output capabilities of a motor. Lower KV motors do not have smoother acceleration because of their KV ratings. The rotor is what dictates the feel of the motor. A 17.5 turn motor has many times more torque than does a 5.5 turn motor. However, to get the motors to run optimally, we run MUCH different gear ratios... 17.5 motors have lots of torque, so we gear them for Speed. Modified motors have minimal torque, but excellent top RPM, so we gear them for Torque.

Modified motors typically have a 12.5mm rotor on a 5mm shaft. This = 7.5mm of magnet on the rotor. This is done to make up for the torque lacking in the lower wind motors.

Spec (17.5, 13.5, 10.5) motors typically have a 12.3mm rotor on a 7.1mm shaft. This is 5.2mm of magnet. This is done to move the powerband of the motor more towards the RPM side, because of the extra torque created in a higher wind motor.

The power is in the rotor..... Modified rotors have 45% more magnet than SPEC rotors.

KV rating has absolutely nothing to do with how aggresive the bottom end of a motor is. There is no industry standard for rating the KV of a given motor. I can trick a 17.5 motor to read 3900kv on my equipment, and can detune a 5.5 to read 2500kv. Timing, air gap, rotor size, rotor length, rotor chemistry, shimming, stator design, wire diameter, wire insulation, wire resistance, Input voltage, ambient temperature, and humidity are all variables in motor KV.

ANY wind motor can be setup to be aggressive, and likewise, can be setup to feel smooth.

My recommendation: Find the company you think offers a product you are interested in, contact them, and ask for recommendations for your particular application and needs.

I suggest a 6.5 motor in a 4wd buggy, or a 7.5 if you run on a tight slick track. Less is more on low bite tracks...

Murfdogg baby! Butter Smooth!

I had never heard of Murfdogg until I saw the recommendation above. Then Murfdogg came in himself and posted everything and even more of what i was going to say about motor selection.

Now I have to go to the website and see since he obviously knows his shi....stuff. :)

Don't know if its the smoothest but the Trackstar V.2 red can motor is for sure and runs cool but the cutouts on the can not sure if that's good outside with dry dirt.

My youngest son is running a Murfdogg 8.5 in his 2wd SCT. He loves it. Says it's the smoothest motor he's ever had in it, but it revs quickly when he nails it. Nobody can catch him on a long straightaway.
