punctured lipo
 

so I dumped my lipo out of my tc3 today. It gently scraped the asphalt but it looks like it may have hit a small pebble on the way and it is punctured. Its not very bad. its dented maybe about 1mm in depth and about 2mm in length and there is a small crack in the base of the dent that im worried about. I can see a little carbon but it doesn't appear that I shorted it as its on the charger now and is showing balanced with in .01.

Since it charges ok and there is no puffing or heat should I be fine? I was just going to put some alu tape on it and roll with it but I figured i would ask, Safty first and all

You prob have not truly punctured it, that crack must not be totally thru the cell membrane. I would seal it with shoe goo or something like it that's flexible and air tight.

If you had punctured it, you would have had a leak and odor come from it and it likely would puff. I punctured one with a small stick running in some woody debris and was lucky to have gotten to it and removed the lipo before it ruined my truck. It made a ton of smoke and got pretty hot, hot enough it would have melted my truck.

Without pics Duster is it still not possible to damage the pack internally without a true puncture? Meaning the media layers inside may be touching which will not cause an immediate issue but can cause a chemical reaction and cause the pack to puff over time?? Was something I heard awhile ago so it may not be an issue anymore but don't know...LMK cause you're the lipo guru...:lol:

Good point, but its usually those that are seriously 'accordioned' like in a plane crash that have serious probs from internal media layers shorting. What I've seen may at worst be a minor loss in capacity - its like the affected area is not longer participating....

Small dent, doubt you'd see anything - there is a separator in between the layers, otherwise the whole thing would be a massive short. You don't see any damage until you damage the file used to separate layers.

alright cool beans I just ordered some new shrink tube and Im going to box it in a thin aluminum case or maybe tin. I haven't decided yet. Then I will never have an issue. Or maybe plastic...:smile:
