Ok, here's my setup:

Tekin RX8
Tekin Redline T8 1400kv
Hyperion VX G3 Lipo, 6 Cell, 22.2 V 2950 mAh 35C.

The battery was used but only had maybe 50 cycles through it. The battery wasn't used that often during the off season due to my location but it was charged and balanced several times before we put any new stress through it.

Yesterday I'm at my local track doing a couple runs and on the back stretch the car stops, starts spewing smoke, and it's pretty much dead. (obviously)

We're puzzled as to why. Not only did the battery nuke itself but it took out the ESC as well. The guy who sold me the battery ran another battery with the same specs last year and had the same thing happened to him. The batteries were balanced each time they were charged and charged using a Hyperion Duo3 charger.

Thoughts?

i dont think a battery can take out an esc like that.........to me you got it backwards i think the esc took out battery (it might not be the esc that caused the issue maybe soldier joint came off esc and shorted or motor shorted and caused the esc to fry and overload the battery)



if the battery is the correct voltage for the esc what could a battery do to an esc except maybe ripple current?i guess it might have been the battery but i doubt it

How many amps does the motor draw ?

As others have said I would blame the ESC before I blamed the Hyperion battery.

I wasn't able to find draw specs for the T8 Motor but I found this for the RX8.

Input Voltage: up to 6S Lipo
Continuous Current: 210 Amps*
BEC: 6.0V/5.0A

I don't see how an ESC can draw 210 amps from the low end to the high end of the speed scale...

Amp draw is determined by the motor

Your pack can provide 103 amps or so (2.95 x 35) continuous

If your motor draws more than that, possible with large motors, then there is every chance you can damage to the battery

in my opinion if the gearing (FDR) is low (for high speed) and the motor is not matched to that configuration, it will draw a very high current and drain your battery too fast over its C rating..... this can burn your battery and overheat the esc fets and heatsink to the point of melthing the case.
