Store Voltage for LiPos
I've searched but can't get a straight answer, so here's my situation.
I have 4 Protek 7.4volt 2000mAH receiver batteries which I regularly run. I've had them for 4 months or so and charge and put into Store Mode with a Hyperion 720i net3 AD. The balance port has been used each time. I always charge at 1C. I now have 2 of these batteries that have puffed up on me. Questions: #1 I looked at the "Store Voltage" setting on the charger and it says 3.0 volts. Is this wrong? If so, what should I have this set to? #2 Can I still run these receiver packs or will the catch fire or fail on me in a race? Thanks for your help!!! |
The number I have found is 3.85V per cell. I set my TPC610 to 50% Storage mode and it does come roughly to ~3.8V per cell. My 2S gets stored at ~7.6V and my 3S ~ 11.4V.

Here's what Hyperion recommends for storage voltage -
"Storage - Lipo should never be stored fully charged, or with less than 50% of capacity remaining. We strongly recommend Hyperion EOS chargers, as they have automatic STORE functions to insure that the packs are in the range of about 60%~70% capacity (3.78V~3.92V resting voltage per cell). After returning home for the day, simply use STORE MODE to achieve this automatically. Batteries are best stored in a cool, dry environment (2~20 °C or 37~68 °F)." Anywhere in that range is fine. 3.85v/cell just happens to be the middle of this range.... |
Thanks a lot. I may have accidentally changed the setting for discharge volts to 3.0 volts which is what may have puffed the 2 packs.
What about running the two puffed packs? What do you all think? Fire or failure or both? |

They will run fine, but they will make a very pretty fire one day.

Puffed lipos are a prob waiting to happen, but depends on how puffed to some extent too. If these are just slightly puffed, they'll prob do fine for a while - when you see any changes in them, then its time for them to be replaced.
If they're seriously puffed - look like a football, get them out of the house now! They are done and waiting to go off. That lipo link is pretty well known and this site doesn't see to go for stickies.... |
We have evacuated the neighborhood. NEST team on the way. Lol
They're slightly puffed, so I'll keep them around for a while. Tx |
