NIMH Battery
Hello All,
I got a 6v 1500mah receiver battery. It almost two years old now. Just recently I discovered that after its fully charged, it just runs for a minute or two in my buggy. Someone recommended me to do a discharge to charge cycle for about 5 times. Is it the right option? How long does it take? What next when its discharged to charged about 5 times? Awaiting positive feedback from you guys. Thanks. |
A common way to revive an old NiMh pac is to cycle it like you describe. Charge it at 0.5 - 1.0amps (lower is prob better) and then run it to discharge it unless your charger has a discharger - then discharge at at 0.5amps. Then repeat. What you're looking for is improvement in run time or the mah going into the batt when charged.
Even better if your charger has a cycling feature - set it to 3 cycles and charge at 0.5, discharge at 0.5. At the end look at the discharged mah, if the number is still climbing, try 3 more cycles. If the discharge mah is not getting any better, the battery is not going to improve and needs to be replaced. Sometimes this will bring a pack back, sometimes it doesn't. |
What should the discharge MAH be at the end of 3 or 5 cycles?

If you've done any good, you should have about 80% of capacity, 1200mah for a 1500mah battery. If you don't get that, the pack is on its way out.

I got two batteries and 1 of them after 3 cycles, it showed a total 1300MAH out of 1500. Option selected was Discharge>Charge
Second battery, same option was selected and it was showing DRY. Not sure about this one. So I did not charge it. Any idea what it meant. |
I'm thinking the charger is telling you that pack is no good. What charger - have you checked the manual for that message to see if the manual has an explanation?
The other pac sounds pretty good. Looks like you saved that one. |
