how are stators measured/tested?
I'd like to be able to test my stators. Is this something that is pratical? What kind of equipment is needed?

Practical - no
possible - yes What are you looking for? The quality of the wind (strength), or the degration of the insulation (life left)? Best thing you can do for your motors is to be sure to have a good rotor in it. |
Measuring inductance can be done. Don't know about brushless RC motors but it was very valuable in evaluating slotcar arms.

I'm sure some stators are better than others, at least on paper. |
I agree with wingracer, I think Inductance is probably the best way when just looking at a stator, but unfortunately, I don't think that inductance meters come cheap(I have access to what we call a Z-meter at work, which can check inductance & capacitance, though I haven't tried it on a stator)....

Can anyone recommend a good meter?

This will give you the inductance of the coils, you'll have to pop the pinion end off of the motor to get at the ring on that end of the motor to connect to.
You'll have to use personal judgment on what a "good" coil will be. You'll have to read between: A - to the common ring B - to the common ring C - to the common ring If you try to read A-B,B-C,C-A you'll get an average & a slightly skewed look at the coils... you'll just have to play with it. This won't test the insulation quality. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/equip...meter-buy.html |
