power supplys?
ok so im upgrading my charger to a nicer charger that balances lipos and it needs a power supply. my question is can you get a power supply thats overrated for the charger? say if the charger is a max 10amp output is it alright to use a 14 amp power supply

noob :D

heck yes im a noob and proud of it
just looking for insight....douche |
Yes
But dont confuse charger output and charger input If your charger is capable of charging a 6s pack @ 10 amps that requires 252 watts (25.2v x 10) If you are using a 12v supply that would require a 21 amp input (252 dvided by 12) Charger will only take what it needs from the power supply Find out the maximum charging output for your charger, add 20% more for inefficiency / loss, anything above that will be unused 250w charger / 300w power supply Cheers |
awesome
thank you for the reply |
there is a thread in this section about modifying a PC power supply. I will be finishing mine up on monday & tuesday and I will post some pics and info. For 15-20 bucks you can get a 300-500 Watt power supply, do a little bit of minor soldering work and save yourself a bunch of money.

Charger rating typically should include the charger's max charge rate and the max power output. If you want to be able to run the charger at full power, the power supply needs to have approx 20% more wattage than the charger's max power output. This 20% allows for the chargers inefficiency which is typically taken as 20%.
If your charger is a 200watt max power output charger, you'd need a PS with240watts (200 x 1.2) to be able to run it at full power. You can run it with less than that however just as long as the PS has 20% more wattage than the charger requires to charge your highest cell count, highest capacity lipo. I don't like bumping into to limits, so I usually get a PS thats bigger than the charger needs. This lets me use the same PS with my next, more powerful charger and not have to buy a new PS everytime I get a new charger. |

I want this one but your charger needs to be capable of 24v this is gnarly!
Picture two Hyperion 5s packs on a Duo3 charging at 15 amps Each simultaneously! This is overkill for the average enthusiast! Lol! I'm not a big fan of ghetto power supplies, I like to do it right once and be done with it. http://www.maxamps.com/Power-Supply-24V.htm |
