What motor is this?
 

I just bought an Evader EXT RC car. And the guy I bought it from, said he got this new motor. I'm not sure he knew too much about RC cars, because he has leads soldered to the motor but when connected to a power source (6v battery) nothing happens. Either the motor is crap, or it's the wrong contacts. When I tried to search for the motor, I kept running around in circles. So, can anybody identify this motor and tell me where to attach leads to? I'm kind of new to RC cars, but I'm pretty good with electronics. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Oh and here is a picture of the motor.

P.S. On the top/bottom of the motor it says "Epic 5.0". If that helps.

Does nobody have any kind of feedback? Or is this another one of those forums where you have to be in a "cool" club to get replies?

Not like that here. Its a holiday and there's just not many folks around.

I've googled epic 5.0 and there's some hits, but the 5 is coming back as just the number of turns. Seems like there's a name missing, should be something like Epic Nemesis 5, or Epic modified brushless motor, or Epic D3 Monster Horsepower etc.

Sorry, there has just been over 100 views and not one person even said anything. And I found a similar motor on another forum that some one had used in his build. So I was able to determine that it is a Trinity Speed Spec.

It’s obviously a brushed motor. Says on the label 21 turn, so a mild modified, a little faster than a 27 turn "stock" brushed motor. The name and graphics are consistent with it being a Trinity motor I think.

It appears to be wired correctly, although I can’t see everything from the one picture. Should run, as it doesn’t look dirty or likely to be worn out.

Could be a hung brush. The brushes are under the springs on each side. Try checking to make sure the springs are pressing the brushes against the commutator. Try spinning the shaft to help it get going, perhaps the brushes aren’t seated (broken in).

The battery you are using needs to have enough current capability to get it going, that might be an issue.

The only information I got was from another forum, so I'm pretty sure it's a Trinity Speed Spec. When taken apart (as depicted in the picture) everything seems to be good. Nothing bent, or broken, or missing. The springs you mentioned are only on 1 side. I don't know if that means anything, but the other side doesn't have a spring. I'd also like to know what kind of pinion I need to get. As I have no other information about this motor, I don't know where to start.

The missing spring is certainly an issue. I can’t seem to see any brushes either, at least on the one side with the missing spring. Suggest taking it to a shop and see if they can get you set up properly. You need a set of same handed springs, and perhaps correctly sized brushes.

The correct pinion depends a lot on the car it’s going into, and the pitch of the spur gear on the car. I’m guessing you need a 48 pitch pinion, what most off roaders use. I’m not familiar enough with the motor or car to recommend a pinion size.

This was the brushed motor used widely in Bolink Legends & the Trinity Steet Spec car we ran in the 90's & early 2000's.
Without the label makes them look odd as we had to have a label on ours to be legal (lol).
They were originally non-rebuildable, the later ones like yours were rebuildable.

That's the same as the one that I got? I found out why it wouldn't work...There are no brushes.:blush: In the later picture I posted you can't see under the commuter and I didn't even notice myself. Than I looked at it after disassembling and noticed there were no brushes. Now the only thing is to figure out how to add, or where to find compatible brushes for this type of motor. Any ideas? OR should I just sell this motor and buy a brushless?

Just toss it and buy a $50 brushless sytem and never worry about brushes again;)

You'd wind up being better off that way equip wise.

I am so happy with brushless I have just given away my stock of brushed motors, about 20 of them some still new. I never want to use a brushed motor again.

AHH! I had no idea it was so late. Black Ops is taking over my life. But anywho, I was trying to avoid spending a whole lot on this car, since I only paid 20 bucks for the whole thing. But it seems inevitable. After checking every single part of the car, I found out that one of the gears in the transmission was worn down so bad that it was almost smooth. So now I have to buy a pinion, gear, ESC and new motor. That's like another $60 I have to pump into this. Anybody want to buy my old dual core? :]
