My problems with the throttle "glitch" seems to be solved. I guess it was the change of deadband from Narrow to Middle that did the trick!

Default Question about motor protection

Run my VTX10/VST 7.5 today, indoor on carpet in a TLR 22 geared 76T/20T. It was about 75 F ambient air temp and the track was very technical with lots of throttle and brake.

One time the motor protection hit. Don't remember what the ESC protection setting was set at (could have been 200 F...) but I measured the temp on the motor can and got about 80 C (around 180 F). How big of a difference is it between motor can temp and internal temp?

Also, the data sheet for the VST motor says you should never run the motor above 180 F. Is that can temp or internal temp? If it is internal temp I'm afraid I have been way above the limit... Hopefully I haven't weakend the motor, that would really suck...

I also have a question about how the protection is working when switching the ESC on. When the motor was around 180 F I switched the ESC off and let the ESC and motor cool down. However, I could not turn the ESC on without getting the two blinking leds (motor protection indicator) until the motor can temp was below 120 F. Is that the correct behaviour? Is it possible that the internal temp still was above the threshold even though the can had been pretty much cooled off.

Another thing. Please have a setting where you can switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius in the next firmware. For us Europeans it almost impossible to translate the temps in the head... Seriously, that would be a great feature.

macke - glad to see you got it running - if you want there is more detail in off road section........

To answer some of your questions. The motor protection is read through the sensor connections. So there could be a 50 to 60 difference from what you read with a temp gun on the can. You can increase it - I normally run 220-230 for mod motors.

Yes, you want to keep the motor temps on the can under 180, lower if possible. One time at that temp shouldn't have hurt the motor.

Yes, again, because it read the rotor temp inside the motor, if you turn off the esc and turn it on, it will still show the cut off warning.

As for the C and F readings, I will suggest it, you never know.

I'm running a VTX-1 in my 12th scale using a 13.5 in blinky racing. The ESC seems to work great but it is certainly lacking brakes at this time. I believe the initial profile had the strength at 80% and I bumped it up to 100% after the first run with very little difference in feel. Is there anything else I should be setting to get more out of it or is this just the way it is?

Ok, I guess you are taking about F temps here (50 to 60). So you are basically saying that setting it to 220 F should be a safe setting for the VST 7.5?

I will try to give the motor a little bit more air. I guess if you run the motor to say 175 F (can temp) and then switch it off. If you then try to start it 5 min later the temp in the motor may actually be above the temp it had when you switched it off and may also be above the set threshold.

Linkless-

Try lowering the Braking Frequency, this will give you more agressive brake feel and allow you car to stop faster.

much respect for Mr. Reedy I learned a lot from him years ago when I ran for Reedy. If you couldn't get one of ours, its a darn good choice.

Shouldn't have any issues.

I had to put one on my mod tc - esc kept thermalling. I didn't drop the throttle pwm though (was still on 16khz)
