Default Timing VS Gearing

I'm looking for some direction in gearing my 17.5 Viper. There is a guy at our track that is running a 4.5 FDR in his TC6 with 60* of timing (same viper 17.5) His car is quite fast so im wondering if i should be gearing higher and leave the timing or gear lower and crank the timing.

Im running a TC5R with a 3.73 FDR and my max temp is 130*F. Jaco blues on carpet,

Thanks

Jason, I'd maybe gear down just a little bit and play with the timing a little. Do some small steps. What's your motor timing set at? When you gear down you come out of the corners a little bit better but with the motor timing set a little higher you can gain your straight away speeds back, to a point. I'd try maybe 4.2 for a FDR and play around from there. I'm guessing down the straight you guys were pretty close but it was in the infield that you were getting beat.

Talk with James or Jim and they should be able to set you up pretty decent as well. Both of them are Viper drivers. When I get the chance to come out and do some club racing I can help you out as well.

Thanks Scott, right now my timing is at 32*. I was actually getting beat in the straight but the infield i was doing ok. The lower Kv of the 17.5 gives some nice torque for sure. I have tried turning up the timing to 45* but could not see a noticable differance in top end speed, i was geared quite high (heat increased significantly)

I will try gearing down and turning up the timing, i was not sure high timing (50*+) will hurt the motor or not.

Ran my new viper speedo yesterday In my new T3 12. I'm happy with the speedo. But I need to either work on the motor set up or go back to running a Reedy as running boost it was really hard to keep the motor at a sensible temperature.
looking forward to getting some running done. Love it.

The reason why reverse does not work is because you are in "Race" mode. To use reverse you must be in "Practice" mode in the esc.

Here is how you do that:
Go the Misc. Control> Run Mode> select "Practice"

now go the the reverse menu and you can set how much % reverse you want. Hope that answers your question

thanks for the quick reply!

i did test the two mode on top of practice mode and they dont have reverse, im new to this ESC and im using this for the drift kit and not to touring kit.

is there really a big difference between practice mode and race mode? or just removing the reverse?

It's in the manual:

Practice allows all settings to be adjusted on the ESC. Also, it allows reverse. Race Stock locks out reverse and does not allow any Motor Timing to be adjusted. Race Modified locks out reverse while maintaining Motor Timing adjustability.

Thanks for the help Jorge!

i still dont understand about the need of motor timing in drifting. im doing a research now what this motor timing all the tourer talking about.

we have Counter steer or Over Drive in drifting and if not gear properly you will very hot motor and esc.

like my kit now will run only for less than 5 mins till it reach the ESC cut off.

still looking on all angle what's the cause. do i need to change gear combination or adjust something in the esc.

Probably could be the Motor Temp Cut to low, check it out, is very sensitive.

if not the motor then the ESC because they are both hot, i set the cut off to 180 both motor and ESC. Right now i have 10.61 FDR on 7.5T motor.

do you think this FDR is too much for my motor?

What? 10.61? Offroad or Onroad? Track layout, boosted or non boosted, give more information. But i think unless your offroad 2wd your totally wrong.

EDIT: just noted your drifting, dont know any point line for drift, sorry. But you could go up on the Temperatures for sure

I would either play with FDR or reduce throttle power to 80% for drifting. I think 7.5 is a whole lot of motor to be drifting with unless its a large track. Is that the motor everyone else at your track is using? I think you are overworking the motor and need to find a better power sweet spot. Let us know the track size and grip conditions. We are here to help you
