Lipo for TX? Or something else?
So... I was wondering what kind of battery mods you guys have done to your TX's. I've seen people running AA NiMH rechargeables to 3S lipos. What have you done and what do you recommend? Why?
Thanks. |
I use low static discharge NiMH AA cells. If you have a radio already setup to use a removable TX pack then lipo may be the way to go, but if it's setup to use AA cells I think LSD NiMH are the way to go. They stay charged over long periods of time and drop right in to the stock AA battery tray.

How long does your charge last with 8 LSD NiMH AA's? |
I run two main radios - a 3PK and a 3PJS - they are of the 8 cell variety and I replaced the orig nicd packs first with higher capacity nimh 8 cell packs, 2300mah versus 600mah. That was an improvement. Then I switched to lipo in both - I've been using 3S 3300mah lipos in each for almost 3yrs. That change was also a big improvement, not only in how long they last between charges, but in the weight reduction as well since lipo is much lighter than the nimh packs.
I have a few 4 AA cell type 2.4 rtr radios too. Those I use the low self discharge rechargeable AAs in them and as my older ordinary rechargeable NiMh AAs wear out, they'll be replaced with the LSD types. I'm building an 8 cell LSD pac fopr my Futaba 7C heli controller since the orig is another 600mah Nixx type pack. These LSDs are a big improvement over ordinary rechargeables. |
These are considered the best ones - Sanyo Eneloops -

This is really low current draw duty - mine are 3C rated and thats prob more than a TX would ever need. Thats still 9.9amps....
