im still new but i think fast charge is to 95% so it doesnt do the "wind down"

if you watch the charger when it is finishing up the amp charge rate will drop slowly making the last few Mah take a long time, i think the fast charge just says "ok im good enough lets go" and you dont have to wait that last 5min or so

You pretty much said it already, but Ill repeat in different terms.

Lipo batteries require a method of charging called "CC/CV". When you start charging a pack the charger uses the Constant Current mode, where your current will stay put until the battery reaches 4.2V/per cell. Once this voltage is reached the charger goes into Constant Voltage mode, and adjusts the current as needed to maintain 4.2V/per cell. The current will drop off slowly until it reaches zero and it is complete.

Fast Charge Mode charges the same in CC mode. In CV mode instead of the current dropping as needed, it drops in large segments at a time, finishing the charge off faster.

I always recommend balance charging every time. I believe your packs will thank you and they will be safer.

You lose a layer of safety when you don't balance while charging lipos. If the balance wires are not connected to the charger, charger has no way of seeing a problem at the cell level where the prob will start. It may be too late by the time the total voltage gets far enough out of spec for the charger to react and do anything (shut down). There has been one case documented here of a lipo incident in a guys bedroom which was damaged that would have been prevented if the balance wires had been connected. Always balance charge.

Lipo Fast mode and regular lipo balance charge mode differ by the CV period of the charge. Since lipo typically receives 85-90% of the charge in the CC mode, the fast mode stops charging at the end of the CC mode or shortly after the start of the CV mode so you wind up with about ~90% charged lipo.

Connect the balance wires anytime you connect a lipo to your charger.

I guess each companies CV method is slightly different than others. Sounds like some of them cut out completely at the end of CC mode, but mine cuts back current at 0.5A increments until the end it cuts from 0.5A to 0.2A and then its done.

most of them cuts down the charge rate to a lower amperage towards the end of a charge cycle. I have few astroflight blinky's, easy to use. Today's chargers have built-in balancers - most of them anyway..
