New Lipo's first cycle
 

First time charging new lip's should you charge to 100% capacity or is it ok to stick them on just for a minute or two? Eg does it affect max capacity to not fully charge first time like on some other battery types?

Have new lipo's that I want to check work, but haven't a use for them for a fortnight so don't want to do a full charge!

It seems to affect them if you don't fully charge them and then run them low or to the lvc. Lots don't seem to realize they are only partially charged when delivered, plus sitting for who knows how long. Running them that way, especially going to the a low voltage cutoff and they'll likely never perform like they should have.

The only thing you don't want to do for the 1st 10-12 cycles is let them get hot. In a surface rc, that shouldn't be a prob.

If they're going to sit, just wait to charge them if possible, or try charging to 4.1v/cell.

Can anyone let me know what is the voltage for storing the lipo ? Or what is the voltage when a batt comes fr the factory ?

Storage is generally 3.7V per cell. On a 2S, this would be 7.4V.

Most manufacturers reccomend 3.85v/cell or 50%

Anywhere between 3.8 and 4.0 and you should be fine

I just got 3 new 3S 2200mah 25C Turnigy lipos for my heli - they were all at 3.8+v/cell.

Storage is a range, not a precise number. The lipo expert on RC Groups got the 3.85v started and has said more than once, its just the average, nothing special about it. This is what Hyperion recommends

"Storage - Lipo should never be stored fully charged, or with less than 50% of capacity remaining. We strongly recommend Hyperion EOS chargers, as they have automatic STORE functions to insure that the packs are in the range of about 60%~70% capacity (3.78V~3.92V resting voltage per cell). After returning home for the day, simply use STORE MODE to achieve this automatically. Batteries are best stored in a cool, dry environment (2~20 °C or 37~68 °F)."

I run Hyperion Lipos and use the Hyperion charger. This feature makes it so easy to manage the batteries. I strongly recommend the chargers to anyone who is struggling with Lipo charging (and the balancing feature is such a no-brainer).

Thanks for all the info. I'm using a rather old charger T15 power up from Tahmazo with a balancer but it don't have a store mode. So have to do it manually.

1 more question. Do all of you use a lipo bag during charging yr batt ? If not, is this still necessary with all the new lipos ?

If you're going to use a lipo sack - majority of lipo incidents happen when charging so that would be the time to use one for sure.

If there is any doubt about your charger, you prob should be using one, and monitoring the charge.
