checking temp on electric motor ?????

ok guys i have a good question... now i have been running Novak motors for a while now and i am temping them but not sure if im temping them right.... novaks have the alum case with a middle ring ( not sure if alum either ) should i be temping at the ring or the case itself or ??? the temps are pretty different from case the the ring... most other motors dont have the ring like the novaks do... please advise if anyone can answer this thnx Will G

Most temp guns are set up for a flat colored surface, so the shiny can material can be a bit off. The center ring is a little better, but some people put a small piece of black tape on the motor and measure on it.

so basically can a safely say temp motor couple spots where the hottest is that my temp ?

That should be fine, unless you are reading really high temps. If you are borderline overheating then you might want to get a more accurate number. If you are well within the proper numbers you should be fine.

I just cut a bit of black electrical tape and stick it to the can. Get's very accurate readings.
The silver will throw the readings WAY off. The anodised section will be better, but still not correct.

Black Tape Size & Temp. Fluctuation

I want to bring this thread back to life and ask a voiple other questions for you experts out there.

Does the black tape read hotter or cooler than the can itself? (mainly talking about Tekin Motors so silver plating)

Secondly, can the tape affect the temperature of the motor? Should you put a one inch piece on the motor just to have enough to shoot the temp or can you go ahead and run the take around the motor one time so you don't have one small spot to shoot at.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, BC

The shiny material usually reads higher than actual, but some temp guns can be adjusted to read this properly. I would stick to one wrap of tape or less to keep the most metal exposed for best cooling.
