hyperion 615i info needed
 

I'm looking at buying the Hyperion 615i duo charger. Do I need to buy a seperate power supply for this charger? Also I plan on using this at the track so I will be charging at the track off my battery I take with me. Will this charger work on DC power? I plan on charging 5S 5000mah batteries. I don't want to take forever to charge them at the track. Thats why I was looking at this particular charger due to it's high output.

this is a DC powered charger, you will need a DC source to power it...

Note that you are not going to get that many charges out of a car battery when charging a 5s 5000mah. Also, Hyperion is supposed to be coming out with a new dual port charger called the SuperDuo. Supposed to be out by the end of the month. Might be worth waiting.

The battery I'm using is a deep cycle marine battery. I use it all the time at the track for this sole purpose. I know what you saying though about charging the 5S. I'll only need to charge my 2 batteries twice each at the track.

Glad you went with proper batt for field cahrging, that kills a car batt since they're not made internally to stand the deep discharges.

The old Duo may be hard to find - dealers haven't been able to re-stock due top the new SuperDuo thats about to be released. It will jump the charger power from 2 x 18watts to 2 x 300watts with 20amps charge rates for each port. If you need the charger output power, it'd be worth waiting for.

What DC power supply would be recommended to power the Hyperion 615i duo III? My local track just installed power outlets so I have somewhere to plug in. I'd rather buy one. I know you can convert a computer one.

The biggest thing I'm looking for is how many amps I need to power it when charging 2 batteries. I potentially will be chargeing 6S lipos. So I guess I wilol need the max.

to charge a 6S at 1C assuming something like a 5000mah it takes 25.2v x 5 =126watts since you're doing two at once then its 252watts. A 2C charge would double that to 504watts and would be beyond the capability of the charger - its a 360watts charger with both ports considered.

If you want to run it at its full capacity, you'd need a PS with about 430watts (typically you allow 20% for charger inefficiency) and that would take about a 30amp PS rated for 13.5v. A 40amp 13.5v supply would provide some margin as it would supply 540watts.

If you're comfortable knowing that you can charge what you have with maybe a little more power in reserve, a 350watt supply would prob do assuming you want to 1C charge 5000mah 6S lipos.

If you'll provide more detail on the 6S you want to charge, I cannarrow down and provide some specific recommendations as far as a supply is concerned. What capacity lipo and what chrge rate (1C, 5C etc)?

I'm currently running 5S 5000 mah lipos now. But I could possibly bump that up to 6s 5000mah lipos. I usually charge at 1C. Could you post some examples of brands I might want to buy? Thanks for the help.

Charging a pair of 6S 5000mah lipos at 1C, you'd need 252watts output from charger. A power supply would need to supply a little more than 300watts allowing for charger's inefficiency. This would make a solid power supply and its suprisingly inexpensive for a 350watt supply, has a good rep, plenty in use on RCGroups -

Pyramids have a good rep here with a lot of units in use. I use a Radio Shack 25amp supply - pricey uinless you find them on sale. I also use a Propeak power suply like this one -

Thats only 276watts and may not be enough for a pr of 6S. Its better to buy a supply with more watts than what you need so the supply is working at a lower percentage of its capacity than woking nearly all the time near 100% of its rating - supply will last a lot longer that way. I've just bought a PC server power supply - 12.2v, but 42amps and will be running both chargers using it.
