setting up a sidewinder 5700
so.. i purchased a castle sidewinder esc w/ a 5700 motor.
im using a 4600 nimh battery. is there any need to download the castle program and connect my esc to it? i have the link cable. i am not racing.. just going to use the car to bash around the yard and driveway. just curious if i should change the factory settings or anything. i appreciate anyones input. this will be the first time im using a brushless motor. c |
I am pretty certain the ESC comes with the Lipo cutoff activated, this can end your fun early when running Nimh packs.
Another thing, if this is your first brushless system, you may want to use the settings to "tone it down" a bit. The 5700 is very powerful and you can tune it with the Castlelink to be more drivable. Plus its just plain fun to hook up your ESC to a computer. |

Its not a must to do anything but turn the lipo cutoff off. But depending on what you are running this system in you might want to slow it down a bit. There is settings for punch control, which just gives a slight "ramp" to the throttle so it is not that instant part-breaking-rip-your-tires-up power. You will have to experiment to find the right setting for your application. Also you can adjust the timing, to give you more bottom end torque or top end speed. For a heavy truck you will want a low timing setting, but for a street car running top speed you might want a higher setting. You may very well be happy with factory settings, they know what they are doing over there when they build them, but it is another option to help you get the perfect running RC.

thank you.
i will turn off the cutoff.. i am using it in a ta05 |
Also it would be a good idea to update the esc to the latest firmware.

The Sidewinder does come with the lvc set as auto-lipo (default) that will need to be changed to either none (prob best) or 5v if you're using 8 - 12 cell NiMh pacs. The rest of the settings - take the defaults, except for punch control, that you prob want to experiment with and see how much you want to tone response down.

so i finally set it all up tonite...
holy cow!!! this is crazy fast!! im not sure what this would equate to in a brushed motor but compared to the 19t motors ive been using in my tl-01, this 5700 is so fast!! im going to tone it down a bit i think through the computer. i dont want to hit a curb or something going this fast! |

Try some punch control......
Punch will slow down the response but not the speed. You may want to gear down a little. When you get more used to it, then you could gear back up. |
I think the dafault for punch is low so he can't really turn that down. He could play with the throttle curve though.

Default is no punch control - this is from Castle's Driver's ED manual
"4. Punch / Traction Control This setting controls how fast the throttle position within the ESC can be changed over time. This smoothes high power starts and limits punch somewhat. As explained previously, acceleration is a matter of battery capability, but you may not want 100% of what the battery can deliver in every situation. This setting is crucial to drag racing as it can be used as a “traction control” to match traction conditions. The lower the setting, the less throttle change limiting there is. For pure burnout and wheelie action, use a very low setting or the disabled setting. For softer acceleration or for a lowgrip surface, raise it up to a higher setting. Don’t be afraid to use these settings! It may be fun to watch your car do back flips, but sooner or later you are going to want to be able to drive it under some semblance of control. This is T H E setting to put you back into control." Punch is backwards from what you might think it would be.... |
Yep, default is punch control disabled. The throttle curve is useful, but it can take some getting used to. I would also drop the timing down some to lower top end power a bit; this will work very similar to changing gearing, but on a smaller scale. The good thing is, these settings are in place for a reason, and if you don't overheat anything you really can't hurt to try the different settings.
