Lipo question

I was looking around at lipos and I know I need a 2 cell pack but when looking at them what does the 25c and 40c ect mean? I know I want 5000+ mah but dont know what the "C" means....

tdt1805 02-03-2010 08:30 AM

One guy I talked to said the higher that is like 40c or 45c or 50c equates into more punch. He said your 25c and stuff with a 5000 mah battery is jsut alot of run time and doesnt provide alot of punch but on slippery tracks this is good so he uses those if that helps. and since your in toledo. Drive to cbus at hilliard fairgrounds. Awesome indoor off road track ;) crcrc.com is website

So for the most punch go for a 50c? Also would this lipo be a wise choice:

id assume so but im going with thunder power cause it sounds like everyone likes them or protek's

The mah rating and the c work together to give you your maximum discharge rate.

2000 mah x 50c =100,000 or 100amps

4000 mah x 25c =100,000 or 100amps

So you need to take all the #'s into consideration.

The higher C rating doesn't automatically translate into more punch unless your motor needs it. You will get to a C rating beyond which there's no further increase in punch. Beyond that, you're buying mor elipo than you need.

is the hyperion 0606i a good charger than?

Duster_360 02-03-2010 03:45 PM

Yes, its a good 50watt AC/Dc charger and will do great as long as you're charging 2S lipos of about 6000mah. Its max charge rate is 6amps. Make sure you get the latest model so you'll have storage mode. Its 3rd one down -

Ya i have it between that and the passport ultra. Im just running 2s so and around 5000 mah wit 30-40c so which would be better for my application?

Duster_360 02-07-2010 08:21 AM

They are about the same price but the Passport has a max charge rate of 8amps and has 100watt of output power. The 0606i has a max charge rate od 6amps and output power of 50watts.

The Passport Ultra will let your lipo needs grow - ie will charge higher cell counts, the 0606i will not. As most find out in this hobby, needs tend to grow over time, Passport Ultra provides some 'headroom', the 0606i does not.

im kinda just looking for something that will charge my lipos quick and to hold me over till CE comes out with the new turbo 35 or 40 or whatever ;) :sneaky:

Duster_360 02-07-2010 10:31 AM

Thwen why spend $130 on either of these when this will do what you want for now??

The only way to shorten lipo charge times is to charger at higher than 1C charge rates and you can't do that unless the lipo is capable of charging at 2C and the charger is capable of high charge rates (2C for a 5000mah is 10amps). None of these 3 chargers will charge at 10amps. The fast charge option or mode on some chargers for lipo just completes the constant current part of the charge giving you about a 90% charge. That part of the lipo charge sequence is the fastest.

Or, you could get a Dynamite Passport Ultra and not bother spending all the cash on the new CE charger. Hell, you could buy (2) of them and still come in waaay under the cost of one Turbo 35.

Charging Amps

Im using an Imax B6 and I have two 2s 7.4v 5000mah 30c Lipo's. Can someone break down the charging amps? I have been charging at 2.5 amps and it takes about 45 minutes. Are lipos like Nimh in the sense of 1amp for every 1000mah? New to lipos and trying to navigate my way through.

Duster_360 02-08-2010 12:07 PM

No, lipos are not like NiMhs. Lipo is charged at the rate recommended by the manufacturer - should be on label - 1C or 2C or maybe higher. The 'C' value is determined capacity/1000 so your 5000mah lipo would have a 1C charge rate of 5000/1000 = 5amps. If label says 2C, then would be 10amps, 5C would be 25amps - this is where lipo is diff than NiMh.

Note this is the max safe charge rate, you can safely charge at lower rates.
